Dams

The number of dams in Germany is a matter of definition. The water laws of the federal states regulate what a dam is. In the register of the ICOLD (International Commission for Large Dams) there are around 311 German dams that meet the ICOLD criterion for large dams, there are significantly more smaller ones. Therefore, this is only an incomplete, alphabetical list from which the volume of the reservoirs can be seen.

Various explanations for understanding the table can be found at the end of this article - see here .

Explanations

  • Construction time: year of start and end of construction (year numbers should be treated with caution, because in the literature the dates of known fixed points such as the start of planning, first groundbreaking, commissioning, completion or official inauguration are often confused) .
  • Crown height:
Highest height of the barrier structure above the valley floor (often also the foundation floor) in meters (the specification of the crown height fluctuates greatly in the literature because authors rarely mention the reference point for their height specification) . The value in bold indicates the highest dam in Germany.
  • Crown length:
length of the barrier structure in meters. The value in bold indicates the longest crown length of a dam in Germany.
  • Name:
The name in bold denotes the largest reservoir in Germany in terms of area.
  • Type of use:
The type of use is sorted alphabetically and in the above list in brackets if of minor importance:
  • Storage
space Storage space in millions of cubic meters ( the volume specification can also be the total storage space . The specification can also be confused with operating space and usable space) .
