The Naturschutzsee Füssenich (officially Neffelsee even Füssenicher lake called) is a Tagebaurestsee extending around 1967 by the reclamation of brown coal - mine " Zuelpich Center " (formerly "Victor", after the founder of the operating company, Viktor Rolff ) of the area The city of Zülpich . The lake is located in the Neffelsee nature reserve , which has existed since 1979.
The plan was to create a bathing beach at the lake, as well as at the Zülpich water sports lake , which was also created during the opencast mining in the region. This plan could not be implemented because the embankments made of sand kept slipping . Thus, apart from nature conservation, the only task today is to function as a flood retention basin for the Neffelbach , which flows west of the lake and has an overflow structure into the lake.
