The water sports lake Zülpich or Zülpicher See is a lake created by the recultivation of the Zülpich opencast mine . The lake is approx. 1.2 km long and 500 m wide and has a total area of approx. 85 hectares. The lake is part of the Kottenforst Ville Nature Park and is located in the Voreifel.

history

Like the Füssenich nature conservation lake, the lake was created through open-cast mining in the Zülpich region and the subsequent recultivation measures in the 1970s. After the end of lignite mining in 1969, the remaining hole was flooded with the help of the Vlattener Bach . Since then it has been used as a leisure and recreation center. A sandy beach was laid out on the south-west bank over a length of around 150 meters, which is used as a monitored bathing area.

Since the late 1990s there has been an increased concentration of faecal coliforms caused by goose faeces. In June 2003 the lake was therefore rated “insufficient quality” in an EU report and a bathing ban was issued. In order to change the situation, the city of Zülpich had the bathing area rebuilt in order to achieve better circulation of the water. These measures had an effect, and in 2004 the State Office for the Environment and Nature Conservation, Agriculture and Consumer Protection classified the lake as "very suitable for swimming".

The water sports lake played a central role at the Zülpich State Horticultural Show in 2014 , a 20-hectare park with a large lake promenade and a new seaside resort was built in the immediate vicinity of the lake.

The council of the city of Zülpich decided in its meeting on December 13, 2011 due to the construction work and the necessary access roads in the southern part of the lake to suspend the use of bathing at the water sports lake until the reopening of the lake in 2014.
