geography
City structure
Mechernich consists of 44 villages with a total of around 27,000 inhabitants:
Antweiler , Berg , Bergbuir , Bergheim , Bescheid , Bleibuir , Breitenbenden , Burgfey, Denrath , Dreimühlen , Eicks , Eiserfey , Firmenich , Floisdorf , Gehn , Glehn , Harzheim , Heufahrtshütte , Holzheim , Hostel , Kalenberg , Kallmuth , Katzvey , Kommern , Kommern- Süd , Lessenich , Lorbach , Lückerath , Mechernich, Obergartzem , Rißdorf , Roggendorf , Satzvey , Schaven , Schützendorf , Strempt , Urfey , Voißel , Vollem , Vussem , Wachendorf , Weiler am Berge , Weißenbrunnen , Weyer and Wielspütz .
The city of Mechernich borders on the following communities:
City of Zülpich , district town of Euskirchen , city of Bad Münstereifel , municipality of Nettersheim , municipality of Kall , city of Schleiden (all in the same district area) and the city of Heimbach (Eifel) (in the district of Düren )
history
Mechernich was first mentioned in 1308 under the name "Megchernich" in the " Liber valoris ", the "Book of Values of the Churches of the Diocese of Cologne" . In 1394, mining on the Mechernich Bleiberg is mentioned in writing for the first time . It is possible that this mining goes back to Roman and Celtic times, but so far there is no reliable evidence for this.
The Jewish population in Mechernich grew from the middle of the 19th century, mainly due to the influx from surrounding villages. In 1885 the local Jewish community belonging to the Schleiden-Malmedy synagogue district had 64 members. A synagogue inaugurated in 1883 in what was then Heerstraße (today's Rathergasse) was apparently already in disrepair in 1930. The church was badly damaged in the course of the November pogroms in 1938 and demolished in 1939.
Incorporations
On July 1, 1969, Mechernich was enlarged through the incorporation of the previously independent communities Berg, Bleibuir, Breitenbenden, Eicks, Floisdorf, Glehn, Harzheim, Holzheim, Hostel, Kallmuth, Lorbach, Vussem-Bergheim and Weyer. In the course of the North Rhine-Westphalian municipal reorganization, the districts of Euskirchen and Schleiden were merged on January 1, 1972. The communities Veytal (previously Altkreis Euskirchen) and Mechernich (previously Altkreis Schleiden) were also merged. In addition, parts of the municipality of Kall (formerly: municipality of Wallenthal) with 390 inhabitants were reclassified to Mechernich. The newly formed community of Mechernich in the new district of Euskirchen includes 44 localities. It was granted city rights on July 23, 1975.

coat of arms
Blazon : "Divided by gold and blue, above a striding, red-tongued and armored black lion, covered with a continuous, five-pointed red tournament collar, below a diagonally crossed silver mallet (miner's hammer) and a silver iron (miner's iron, mallet and iron ) . "
The coat of arms was approved on February 9, 1973 by the district president of Cologne, Günter Heidecke , after Ernst Albert von Bodelschwingh , the upper president of the then Rhine province , granted the original municipality of Mechernich the right to use a municipal coat of arms on August 6, 1935. |
|
Justification of the coat of arms: The black lion with the five-fluted red tournament collar in gold is taken from the coat of arms of the Counts of Blankenheim (rising there), who ruled Mechernich for over 500 years alongside other sexes. Mechernich was particularly influenced by the mining industry, which is symbolized by the adoption of “mallets and iron” in the form of the guild coat of arms of the miners. |
Town twinning
Mechernich has had a partnership with the town of Nyons in the south of France since 1967 . Since 2016 there has also been a city partner city with the Polish city of Skarszewy .
Sightseeing and tourism
- The Eifel aqueduct runs through the southern districts of the city . It is one of the longest aqueducts of the Roman Empire , which supplied ancient Cologne with drinking water.
- The Satzvey district is home to one of the best-preserved moated castles in the Eifel, the Satzvey Castle of the same name .
- Kakushöhle , a cave system in the Dreimühlen district, which was settled in the early days of human history. The caves were created by washing out around 250,000 to 500,000 years ago. In prehistoric times, the caves were secured by an artificial wall.
- The Herkelstein , a 434.5 m high elevation in the north-eastern part of the Eifel (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) forms the highest point of the Eschweiler ridge and is located in the North Eifel Nature Park.

Castles and Palaces
There are seven castles and two palace complexes in the urban area of Mechernich: Antweiler , Berg , Firmenich , Kommern, Zievel , Heistard , Satzvey . The Satzvey Castle is known for its medieval events far beyond the district. The castle complexes are Eicks Castle , which has its roots in the Middle Ages, as it emerged from a castle-like Fronhof, and Wachendorf Castle in the district of the same name. The Rath house was located between Roggendorf and Strempt . Burgvey still exists as a ruin .

Churches
Several churches in Mechernich and its districts are dedicated to John the Baptist :
- the old church in Mechernich, which already existed in the 11th century as a flat-roofed building with an undivided tower,
- the New Parish Church of St. Johannes Baptist in Mechernich, built in 1953 according to plans by Peter Salm ,
- the branch church St. Johannes in the district of Roggendorf, which was built in 1890 according to the plans of the architect Richard Abel in the neo-Eastern style. In its apse is the Roggendorfer carved altar , a three-part carved altar, 235 × 280 cm, from around 1500. It comes from Bad Kreuznach and is a gift from the Kreuser family.
- the parish church St. Johann Baptist in Antweiler belongs to the pastoral care area Veytal .
There are works of art from the Middle Ages in several churches in the city of Mechernich :
- The Floisdorf parish church of St. Pankratius goes back to plans by the Cologne builder Theodor Kremer and was consecrated on August 1, 1895. The Madonna and Child dates from 1400 and is therefore probably the oldest work of art from the Mechernich area. It was redesigned, repaired and gilded in 1912. Her dress is hallmarked with lilies . Unfortunately, the thumb and index finger of the right hand are broken off.
- Today's parish church of St. George the Martyr in Kallmuth was also completed in 1888 according to plans by Theodor Kremer . The Kallmuther Pietà stands on a side altar to the left of the wooden apse and is 79 cm high, and was probably made around 1475. It is framed by images of Simeon and Jeremiah.
- In the chapel of the Three Holy Moors and Saint Hubertus in the hostel you can see the Pax tablet , a man of sorrows , oil on walnut, 19.2 × 11.3 cm, thickness: 2.2 cm from the 15th century (classification from the Rhenish Office for Monument Preservation ). On the back there is a dovetail-shaped handle that also serves as a stand.
- The Strempter Pietà is located in the Church of St. Rochus . This was built in the years 1879/80, also according to the plans of Theodor Kremer . The Pietà with a height of 74 cm dates from the 15th century. It is noteworthy that the Savior has a bump, probably a plague bump, on the left side of his stomach.
Bike paths
The cycle paths lead through the city :
- Eifel-Höhen-Route , which runs as a circular route around and through the Eifel National Park .
- Valley route , it opens up interesting tourist places in North Rhine-Westphalia on a family-friendly route.
- Moated castle route , it connects more than 130 castles on the edge of the Eifel and in the Cologne Bay .
- D Route 4: Mittelland Route : From Aachen via Bonn and Siegen , Erfurt , Jena and Chemnitz to Zittau .

hospital
The Mechernich district hospital with a total of 413 beds is located in Mechernich with a total of 9 specialist departments, one occupational department and two non-bed departments. The Kreiskrankenhaus Mechernich GmbH was founded in 1909. The history, however, goes back to the 19th century, when accident victims were treated in a specially set up place for supply. This was probably the foundation stone for today's trauma surgery department in the Mechernich district hospital.
