Life

Tom Krey grew up in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . In 1968 he stayed in France for half a year. After visiting the Louvre in Paris , he began training in painting with recognized Impressionists in Munich , where he lived from 1969 to 1993. 1993 started studying painting at the Axel Andersson Academy in Hamburg and graduated in 1997 with a certificate. Tom Krey was a student of Georg Kiste in Munich. During his time in Munich in the 1980s, Tom Krey often visited him in Ysenburgstrasse for study purposes. A friendly relationship developed. Together they went on painting excursions in the Murnauer Moos and created landscape studies in oil paints in "plein air" fashion. After numerous study visits all over Europe and the Caribbean, he moved to Mechernich / Eifel in 1993. Since then he has been a freelance painter with over 130 solo exhibitions and participations in international group exhibitions, for example in Spain, Italy (Vatican), France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Holland. Since 1996 he has been a member of the European Association of Visual Artists, EVBK. From 1996 to 2020 Tom Krey was selected 18 times by the international jury of the European Association of Visual Artists for the annual exhibitions in Prüm. Tom Krey is married and has one daughter.

Tom Krey's career led him from Impressionism to Pointillism via Neo-Impressionism to his special spatula technique, what he called " Sectorism ". In October 1997 Tom Krey created the term sectorism in international spelling for his spatula technique . The term has accompanied him through all exhibitions until today. In this painting technique of his, the paint is applied with a spatula according to the shape and rhythm of the landscape. The paint applications are clearly delimited from one another, either by compressed accumulations of paint or by border lines of the background paint that has been left open. The border lines that arise when applying with the spatula encircle the adjacent color sectors and are included in the representation with their shape and the resulting rhythm. With sectorism, the rhythm of the landscape becomes the rhythm in painting. As a logical consequence, the development led to abstract painting. His current style of painting emerged from these experiences: Tom Krey is inspired by nature and gives himself completely to his feelings and emotions in his work. From the sum of his painting techniques, paintings are created with an individual interpretation of the landscape and result in new harmonies parallel to nature.

Tom Krey painted many well-known painter personalities such as a series of 90 × 90 cm portraits , such as Vincent van Gogh and the demon of painting , Claude Monet the color seer , Paul Gauguin the wild and his dream of the South Seas , Camille Pissarro made of spots of color landscapes , Paul Cézanne and his Montagne Sainte-Victoire and Alfred Sisley become the full impressionist . In addition to the portraits, the pictures also show the symbolism of her life and work.

His oil painting I love you was on a European tour from 2003 to 2008 as part of the traveling exhibition The Smiling Christ and was shown in the Vatican , in Santiago de Compostela and Assisi , among others .

His painting The Prayer will also be on an exhibition tour from 2008 onwards. In 2010 he was invited to the international group exhibition Border Crossing in Schönecken (Rhineland-Palatinate). This was followed in 2012 by participation in the highly acclaimed exhibition St. Matthias in Focus in Trier , which was curated by the director of the European Art Academy Trier. The painting by Tom Krey St. Matthias im Sturm der Zeit selected by the jury is described on 2 pages in the exhibition catalog.

There are a lot of press reports about Tom Krey (see Google), u. a. The "Kölnische Rundschau" published a half-page personal report in the culture section of the newspaper under "Personal" with the heading "His pictures are always exciting".

In 2015, the sum of his painting techniques in the Contemporary Landscapes Painting area developed into a new contemporary representation of his paintings. With these pictures like " Spring Island " (2016) 100 × 130 cm, " Summer Day " (2016) 90 × 130 cm or " Waldlichter " (2016) 90 × 100 cm, there was a completely new application of paint: Despite the pastose oil paint, the relatively Placed unmixed next to each other and connected with a small spatula, the complementary background color still shows up everywhere, like pixels, which, in combination with the lavishly applied paint, create virtuoso, three-dimensional color vibrations. In these paintings there are no lines and lines, only the haptic, pure color gives the form.

The individual parts of the picture appear abstract, the motif only emerges at a distance - there is a balance between form and content. Tom Krey gave this, his second new development after “Sectorism” (1997), the apt name: “ Oil pixel technology ”, which further enriches his entire work.

Tom Krey painted 5 large portraits of the protagonists such as the mayor of Nyons (100 × 90 cm), the French delegation (90 × 90 cm) and Konrad Adenauer (100 × 90 cm) on the occasion of the anniversary " 50 years of Mechernich / Nyons friendship " 90 cm).

In 2017 Tom Krey created the sculpture “My City” for the city of Mechernich. The 4.50 m high and 400 kg heavy steel work of art in the form of a bud consists of 45 steel rings, each with the name of a town belonging to the town. This symbolism says: “Together we are strong and we can grow.” The stars in the lower part of each ring have a strong European message: “Every town is part of the European house and makes its contribution to the realization of the European idea”. The sculpture was set up on October 13, 2017 in the presence of around 150 guests in front of the Mechernich town hall and inaugurated as the new landmark of the city.

In 2020 Tom Krey created a series of new, 90 × 100 cm, contemporary portrait paintings a. a. by Mahatma Gandhi , Pablo Picasso , Mona Lisa and Ludwig van Beethoven . Tom Krey was also commissioned by the board of the European Association of Visual Artists to create a portrait of the long-time president of the EVBK, Prof. Dieter Alexander Boeminghaus. The painting, 90 × 100 cm in size, was handed over to the city of Prüm in May and will be presented in the town hall there in future.

Tom Krey's pictures are in private and public collections. In 2012 and 2014, WDR television broadcast a report about his pictures on the local time show in Aachen .
