Kiste painted almost exclusively landscapes around Munich and the Bavarian Prealps . He made a distinction between plain-air pictures, which he called "originals" and signed with his name, and those that were created in his studio in Munich on customer request. He signed the latter with the pseudonym "Gorte" .

There are contradicting information about the assignment: He was a representative of the Munich School and a refusal to abstract tendencies such as those marketed by the art market from the 1950s at the latest. The beginnings of abstraction tendencies in his work are sometimes interpreted in a late impressionist way .

The mostly small-format works were lavishly framed and gilded by F. Leischwitz in his workshop at Fraunhofer Strasse 29 in Munich.
