Ernst Albert Karl Wilhelm Ludwig von Bodelschwingh (born November 26, 1794 at Haus Velmede near Weddinghofen , † May 18, 1854 in Medebach , Sauerland ) was a German administrative lawyer and Minister of State in the Kingdom of Prussia .

origin

He comes from the Westphalian noble family Bodelschwingh . His parents were Franz von Bodelschwingh and Friederike geb. from Plettenberg to Heyde . His brother Carl von Bodelschwingh was Prussian Minister of Finance from 1862 to 1866.

Life

After graduating from high school in Hammonense , Ernst attended the ducal Nassau forest academy in Dillenburg . He then studied political science and law at the new Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin .

In 1813 he took part in the wars of liberation under the pseudonym "von Boden" . As a member of the Leibregiment he fought in the Battle of Großgörschen , the Battle of Lützen , the Battle of Bautzen and the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig . He received both Iron Crosses . Wounded with a shot through the lung in the fighting near Freyburg , he was saved by Friedrich Georg von Stein and took eight months to recover. However, his health remained poor from this injury. He continued his studies in 1814 at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen and became a member of the Corps Guestphalia II. When the war broke out in 1815 he was appointed officer and ended the war as a major . As a member of the Landwehr he was promoted to colonel in 1842 . After completing his studies, v. Bodelschwingh trainee lawyer and assessor at the governments of the Münster , Kleve and Arnsberg governments and for a short time at the Ministry of Finance in Berlin .

In 1822 he was appointed district administrator of the Tecklenburg district and remained in this position until 1831. He then became senior councilor in Cologne and just six months later he was the district president in Trier .

In the summer of 1834 v. Bodelschwingh from King Friedrich Wilhelm III. appointed High President of the Rhine Province in Koblenz . At 39, he was one of the youngest senior presidents in Prussia . This career remained unique in Prussian administrative history. But von Bodelschwingh's ascent did not end there. In 1842 the king appointed him finance minister , after which he left the Rhine province and moved to Berlin with his family. After Count Alvensleben left , von Bodelschwingh became cabinet minister in 1844. In 1845 he took over the office of Minister of the Interior . This made him the highest ranking minister in Prussia. In 1852 von Bodelschwingh was appointed district president in the Arnsberg district. At the age of 59, he succumbed to lung disease on a business trip.

politics

From 1830 to 1833 he was a member of the Provincial Parliament of the Province of Westphalia for the constituency of Mark . After the United Landtag was convened , v. Bodelschwingh, as royal commissioner, was responsible for the preparation and implementation. When he could no longer come to terms with royal politics and the March Revolution took place in 1848 , he withdrew from politics. He and his family returned to Westphalia to their parents' estate Haus Velmede in Weddinghofen , now part of the city of Bergkamen . In September 1849 von Bodelschwingh returned to politics. He ran in the constituency of Soest - Hamm as a member of the second chamber of the Prussian state parliament . He belonged to the right-wing liberal center group (not to be confused with the German Center Party ). After the German Revolution he sat in the Volkshaus of the Erfurt Union Parliament . He was a member of the 4th electoral district of Berlin and chairman of the constitutional committee. Until March 1850 he was President of the Board of Directors of the Union.

family

Ernst von Bodelschwingh married Charlotte von Diest on July 27, 1822 (* November 27, 1793; † May 27, 1869), a daughter of the Tribunal President Friedrich von Diest and Maria von Oven. The marriage had two daughters and five sons, including:
