Adolf Heinrich Wilhelm Scholz , from 1883 von Scholz (born November 1, 1833 in Schweidnitz , Province of Silesia , † March 20, 1924 at Seeheim Castle near Konstanz ) was a Prussian finance minister and state secretary in the German Empire . Father of the writer Wilhelm von Scholz (1874–1969).

Life

After finishing school in Schweidnitz , Scholz studied law in Berlin and Bonn from 1851 . After taking the state examination in Berlin, he worked briefly as a court assessor at the Berlin Court of Appeal in 1859. In 1860, Scholz came to the governments of Danzig and Opole as a Prussian government assessor and later worked at the Oberpräsidium in Breslau as senior councilor. In 1864 he became an unskilled worker in the Prussian Ministry of Education and in 1869 a councilor.

In 1870 Scholz was elected to the Prussian House of Representatives, to which he belonged until 1873, first as a member of the Conservative and later as a member of the New Conservative parliamentary group. In 1871 Scholz joined the Prussian Ministry of Finance. Appointed Undersecretary of State by Reich Chancellor Otto von Bismarck in 1879 , he was entrusted with the management of the newly created Reich Treasury . Promoted to State Secretary in 1880, Scholz headed the Reich Treasury until 1882. In July 1882 he was finally appointed Prussian Minister of Finance. In this office he served under the emperors Wilhelm I , Friedrich III. and Wilhelm II until 1890.

Seeheim Castle (Villa Scholz)

In 1885 he bought " Schloss Seeheim " (later also known as "Villa Scholz") near Konstanz from Ernst Lang , which he noticed during a trip to Switzerland. In 1889/90 he had a new building built on the foundations of the previous building in the style of historicism according to plans and under the direction of the architect Hermann Eggert from Strasbourg .

After his retirement as minister, Adolf von Scholz and his family moved into the property in November 1890, and Prince Bismarck and Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin were also present at the inauguration .

Adolf von Scholz was married to Anna Mentzel (1847–1938) since 1873. Her son was the writer Wilhelm von Scholz (1874–1969).
