He was initially court clerk and assessor in the Prussian province of Saxony , later became a magistrate in Liebenwerda and served as 1902-1904 Government in Hildesheim and the Prefect in Hanover operates. Political party

During the time of the German Empire , Hergt was non-party , but was close to the free conservatives . After the First World War , he was one of the founders of the DNVP and was elected its first Reich Chairman on December 19, 1918. As party leader, Hergt took a moderate line. Against the resistance of the old conservative right wing of the party , he tried to weaken it and to convert the DNVP from an anti-democratic to a Christian-conservative people's party with a broad base in all strata. Although Hergt, as a monarchist , was a staunch opponent of the Weimar Republic , he rejected attempts at political overthrow. After some DNVP members of the Reichstag had approved the Dawes Plan in 1924 , Hergt came under increasing criticism. Thereupon he resigned the party leadership on October 23, 1924. Johann Friedrich Winckler was appointed as his acting successor , who held the office until 1926. In October 1928 Hergt ran again for the chairmanship of the DNVP, but was subject to Alfred Hugenberg in the election .

From 1919 to 1923, Hergt was a member of the Prussian State Constitutional Assembly and then of the Prussian State Parliament . He was a member of the Reichstag from June 1920 to November 1933 , where he was chairman of the DNVP parliamentary group from 1920 to 1924. In parliament he represented the constituencies of Liegnitz and Hessen-Nassau.
