Karl Eduard Heusner

Karl Eduard Heusner (born January 8, 1843 in Perl , † February 27, 1891 in Weimar ) was a German vice admiral .

Life

Heusner joined the Prussian Navy as a cadet in 1857 and took part in the expedition to East Asia on the frigate SMS Thetis between 1859 and 1862 . In 1864 he commanded the gunboat SMS Wespe in the German-Danish War and was involved in the naval battle near Jasmund . In the following years Heusner was stationed in the Mediterranean and also sent to the West Indies . Promoted to lieutenant captain in 1868 , he commanded the cadet training ship Arkona in the North Atlantic during the Franco-German War . He only returned to Germany after the end of the war in 1871. In 1872 Heusner led survey work in the Baltic Sea and in 1873 became chairman of the torpedo testing commission .

From October 1, 1878 to 1880, he was sent to South America as commander of the SMS Hansa tank corvette to take over the West Indian station of the Imperial Navy. Heusner was to occupy the station regularly with the Hansa and he was the first commander of the Imperial Navy to take over an overseas station.

In January 1879, Heusner was with the Hansa in the port of La Guayra , as attacks on German residents were feared due to a revolution in Venezuela .

After the unrest subsided, Heusner visited various West Indies on a tour and then went to Bahia / Brazil .

There he was ordered to call at the Peruvian port of Callao to protect German interests due to the saltpeter war between Peru / Bolivia and Chile . He arrived there with the Hansa on September 8, 1879 and also generally monitored compliance with the neutrality laws there.

In 1881 Heusner was promoted to sea captain and appointed head of the military science department in the Admiralty .

In 1888 Heusner became head of the naval department (naval department) in the admiralty. In this position he was promoted to Rear Admiral on January 21, 1889 . In the same year Heusner was Secretary of the Navy Office . For a heart condition he had to give up this position and was on 22 April 1890 award of the character as a vice admiral for disposition while à la suite of Seeoffizierkorps asked.

Karl Eduard Heusner died on February 27, 1891 in Weimar.
