Gerhard Schwetje

Gerhard Schwetje (born April 3, 1936 in Trier ; † January 15, 2020 there ) was a German politician ( CDU ) and Roman Catholic priest .

Life

Schwetje grew up in Wittlich and attended the Cusanus grammar school there. He then studied law and political science in Freiburg, Bonn and Mainz. After graduation, he was 1962 to 1966 in the District Office Saarburg active, then a year in the county government Trier and two years in Mainz Economic and Transport Ministry.

In 1969, at the request of Prime Minister Helmut Kohl , Schwetje became District Administrator of the newly formed Landau-Bad Bergzabern district . On his initiative, the district was later renamed the Südliche Weinstrasse (SÜW) district . From 1982 to 1991 Schwetje was Trier's district president . After the change of power in the state in 1991 , the SPD became the strongest party in Rhineland-Palatinate for the first time ; Schwetje was replaced and was then director of the Catholic Academy in Trier for five years . He was chairman of the board of trustees of the University of Trier, chairman of the Trier district association of the German Red Cross and chairman of the Franco-German Society and chairman of the Eifelverein. For his commitment, he was awarded the Ordre national du Mérite , the French Order of Merit. In 2011, the district of Südliche Weinstrasse named him the first and so far only honorary citizen of the district. Schwetje received further awards in 1979 with the golden circle coat of arms pin and in 1982 the honorary goblet of the district of SÜW.

After the death of his wife Liesel in 1994, the then 58-year-old family man Gerhard Schwetje decided to become a Catholic priest. He pursued private studies and completed two pastoral semester and received on 5 July 1997 by Bishop Hermann Josef hospital in Trier Cathedral , the ordination . In July 1997 he celebrated a primary service in Bad Bergzabern. Until 2011, Schwetje was the pastor of the St. Elisabeth Clinic and the DRK Hospital in Saarlouis . He was a close friend of the pastoral theologian Heinz Feilzer .
