history
The Vareo network exists under the current name since December 2013. At that time, joined the new Europe-wide tender for the Zweckverband transport Rhineland (RNR) and regional rail transport authorities to DB Regio assigned traffic contract in force. The regional rail passenger transport association Rhineland-Palatinate North was also involved in the award , as part of the routes served are in Rhineland-Palatinate . Previously, the services in local rail passenger transport (SPNV) were advertised for the first time in 1999, at that time under the name "Cologne Diesel Network". DB Regio was also able to secure this award after the services had previously been awarded directly to Deutsche Bahn in 1999 as part of the regionalization of the regional rail transport .
The Vareo network essentially comprises the regional rail transport services on those railway lines around Cologne that are not electrified. The following routes are largely or exclusively used with services from the Vareo network:
- Eifelbahn (Cologne – Euskirchen – Gerolstein – Trier)
- Oberbergische Bahn (Cologne – Gummersbach – Lüdenscheid)
- Voreifelbahn (Bonn – Euskirchen)
- Erft Valley Railway (Euskirchen – Bad Münstereifel)
- Ahr Valley Railway (Remagen – Ahrbrück)
There are also services between Bonn and Remagen on the Left Rhine route .

vehicles
In 2011, Deutsche Bahn ordered 56 diesel multiple units from the manufacturer Alstom . These are 18 units of the type LINT 54 and 38 units of the type LINT 81. Due to delays in approval, the trains could not be used as planned for the timetable change in December 2013. The operation began in the course of 2014, the last vehicles were not put into operation until April 2015.
In February 2015, DB Regio ordered two more LINT 81 multiple units, which were accepted in December 2015. In order to increase the vehicle capacity, nine LINT 54 multiple units were expanded by an intermediate car in 2016 and are therefore almost identical to the LINT 81.

future
The lines RB 24 and RB 25 are to be replaced by a new S-Bahn line S 15 between Overath and Kall after the end of the transport contract . In addition, the Voreifelbahn is to be electrified. Because of the S-Bahn traffic, the stops in Weilerswist and Mechernich will then be omitted on lines RE 12 and RE 22 .
Incidents
- In the early morning of June 1, 2018, a class 620 train derailed as RE12 to Trier at the southern end of the single-track Wilsecker tunnel due to thunderstorms and mudslides. The train was towed and taken to the Deutzerfeld depot in Cologne. Nobody was injured.
