The Cologne-Deutzerfeld station is an important depot of the Deutsche Bahn AG in the Cologne district of Deutz on the right bank of the Rhine . It has its origins in the Deutzer Feld train station of the Cologne-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft .

history

Deutzer Feld station was built in 1859 by the Cologne-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (CME) as part of the construction of the Deutz-Giessen railway line.

An originally planned simple transfer station with island platform for the destinations Deutz, Cologne, Minden and Gießen with access from Deutz – Mülheimer Chaussee was not carried out. It was then expanded as a marshalling and storage yard with the facilities, buildings and workshops necessary for the operation of the Cologne (-Deutz) –Minden and Deutz – Gießen lines, in particular an "extensive wagon repair shop", including:

  • Locomotive shed for 12 machines
  • Water station with steam engine
  • 37-foot turntable
  • Apartments for train masters and train station inspectors
  • Wagon shed
  • Control scale
  • Space for loading and unloading goods
  • Car workshop with:
    • Car repair shop
    • paint shop
    • mechanical workshop
    • Wrought
    • Workshop for wheels and bandages
    • Materials magazine
    • Wooden magazine
    • Workers' dining room with porter's house

Todays situation

View from the north of the company premises

The Cologne-Deutz field station is two single-track, electrified and as mainline classified railway lines with the Köln Messe / Deutz connected.

All regional transport lines ending there (from the Eifel route the lines RE 12, RE 22 and RB 24, and the Oberbergische Bahn RB 25 of the so-called diesel network Cologne, from the left Rhine route the RB 26 MittelrheinBahn and from the Erftbahn the line RB 38, in the edge of the day trains on other lines) will be parked at Cologne-Deutzerfeld station and prepared for new use.

But also partly to ICE or Thalys trains parked there (see the left part of the image on the right). These already end in Cologne Central Station , the ICE depot is also located in the depot there.

In 2007 about 70 tracks were in operation.

perspective

A small part of the site has since been abandoned and in part has already been planned or built on. Until around 2005, Deutsche Bahn was still thinking about extensive conversion of parts of the Cologne-Deutzerfeld depot. The city of Cologne then planned u. a. a use in particular for the logistics of the Cologne Exhibition Center. However, this had to be given up in 2009, as Deutsche Bahn “will need its space for railway operations in the long term according to its own current plans.”

In 2010, however, an urban planning concept with two variants was worked out for a sub-area with the working title Deutzer Feld in the triangle between the Cologne – Düsseldorf and Cologne – Siegburg railway lines as well as the Straße des 17. Juni and the Walter-Pauli-Ring. The aim of the planning is to create the urban framework conditions for the Cologne fire brigade center planned there and for commercial uses in the form of offices and services without retail with five to seven-storey buildings.
