The Oberbergische Bahn operates in advance traffic of the Cologne S-Bahn as a regional train with the line identification RB 25 from Cologne Hansaring via Cologne Hbf , Overath , Gummersbach and Meinerzhagen to Lüdenscheid .

Line course

The Hoffnungsthal station , left in the background the former station building in 2016

The regional train RB 25 begins in Cologne-Hansaring and leads over the tracks of the S-Bahn main line to the Cologne-Kalk – Overath railway line , in Overath then to the Siegburg – Olpe railway line (also called Aggertalbahn ), on which it takes you to Gummersbach- Dieringhausen drives. From there it takes the Volmetalbahn to Lüdenscheid-Bruges and then branches off onto the branch line to its final stop in Lüdenscheid . The maximum speed of 120 km / h is only extended between Cologne and Rösrath-Stümpen.

The regional train RB 25 runs in the section between Cologne Hansaring and Engelskirchen and every half hour during rush hour to Gummersbach. There are also trains to Lüdenscheid every hour.

history

The RB 25 emerged from the City-Bahn introduced in 1984, which introduced hourly traffic between Cologne and Gummersbach. Before local traffic was discontinued on the route beyond Gummersbach until 1987, the city railways continued to run every two hours to Meinerzhagen.

In 1998, all lines in North Rhine-Westphalia were clocked and received line numbers with line names. So also the local trains between Cologne and Gummersbach, which now operated as line RB 25 under the name "Oberbergische Bahn". With the start of operations in 1998, DB Regionalbahn Rheinland won the tender for the Cologne diesel network, which also included the operating services of the RB 25. The associated planned introduction of vehicles of the 644 series on the RB 25 could only be implemented in 1999.

In April 2003, the line was extended beyond its previous endpoint in Gummersbach to Marienheide. At that time, those responsible still expected the further extension to Bruges to be implemented quickly. For the section Gummersbach - Bruges, a potential of 4,500 passengers per day was predicted at that time. A planning freeze was imposed on a first reactivation attempt in 2006 as part of the cut in regionalization funds by the then NRW Transport Minister Oliver Wittke .

On the way as RB11553 (Lüdenscheid - Köln Hansaring), the 620 012 arrives at Lüdenscheid-Bruges station on December 14, 2017.

The Marienheide - Meinerzhagen section went back into operation with the timetable change in December 2013, until February 26, 2014 by rail replacement services. In 2015, the Zweckverband Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe (NWL) signed the transport contract with DB Regio for the extension of the RB 25 towards Meinerzhagen-Lüdenscheid. The Meinerzhagen – Lüdenscheid section went back into operation when the timetable changed in December 2017, but initially every two hours, as the infrastructure and the connection situation in Bruges did not allow more frequent intervals. With the final expansion of the section and the completion of the Kierspe train station and the Halver-Oberbrügge stop in December 2019, the offer was extended to an hourly cycle.

When the timetable changes in December 2019, there is also a half-hourly offer to Engelskirchen on the weekend. There is also a half-hourly service from Cologne to Gummersbach between 12 noon and 11 p.m.

Tariff

On the Cologne – Meinerzhagen section, the tariff of the Rhein-Sieg transport association applies . The Westphalian tariff applies in the section between Meinerzhagen and Lüdenscheid .

future

In January and February 2019, an operational test was carried out to determine the timetable stability when an additional stop was set up in Overath-Vilkerath. The trains made an hourly operating stop on the open route during this period. After evaluating the results, a decision should be made about setting up the additional stop. Independently of this, a crossing point will be set up in Ehreshoven to increase operational stability. This is intended to halve the single-track block section between Overath and Engelskirchen, which is 12 kilometers long today, and to increase operational stability in the event of irregularities. The route section is fully used by the now regular half-hourly operation, so that longer delays lead to train cancellations or to the transfer of delays to other trains.

The section between Cologne Hansaring and Overath is to be used every 20 minutes in future. This requires a two-track expansion. The line is to be integrated as S 15 into the network of the Cologne S-Bahn . All in all, there will be an hourly service between Kall and Gummersbach, which will be compressed into a 20-minute cycle between Euskirchen and Overath. In addition, the RE 22 from Trier to Lüdenscheid is to be extended every hour so that the lines overlap.

The Oberbergische Bahn Alliance was founded in September 2017 to promote the expansion of the line. The neighboring communities and districts as well as the Rhineland Local Transport Association and Deutsche Bahn are represented in it. The results of a feasibility study on the electrification and optimization of the Oberbergische Bahn should be available in late 2019 [out of date] .

Awarded to DB Regio

In March 2011, the responsible authorities awarded the Cologne diesel network to DB Regio to operate from December 2013 for a period of 20 years. The following measures were implemented as part of this award:

  • Route extension (reactivation) beyond Marienheide to Meinerzhagen and Lüdenscheid
  • Speed-increasing measures in the section from Cologne-Porz to Rösrath
  • Expansion of the range of journeys in the Overath – Engelskirchen section by extending the intermediate trains Cologne – Overath (thirteen journeys Mon – Fri)
  • Expansion of the range of journeys in the Overath – Gummersbach section by fourteen journeys Mon – Fri
  • additional peak hours amplifier in the morning peak from Overath (7:11 am) to Cologne (7:48 am)
  • Establishment of a half-hourly service between Marienheide and Gummersbach between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m. for school and training traffic

Until August 2011, the line was operated by DB Regio Rheinland , an independent subsidiary of DB Regio AG. With its dissolution, DB Regio NRW already took over operations. With the timetable change in December 2013, DB Regio NRW presented its new concept for the Cologne diesel network, which also includes the Oberbergische Bahn. The new brand name is “ Vareo . The train for the region ", which is made up of the regions of the Cologne diesel network in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate , with its two RE lines, five RB lines and one S-Bahn: V oreifel, A hrtal, R hein, e IFEL and O berbergisches country / upper Volme. In addition to the RB 25, the routes include the following lines:

vehicles

DB class 218 with City-Bahn (1984–1999) when leaving Marienheide station in the direction of Meinerzhagen
BR 644 (1999-2014) as RB 25 in Engelskirchen

Vehicles of the BR 620 and 622 Alstom Coradia LINT are currently in use.

The railway line used to be known under the name "Aggertaler". From 1984 the Deutsche Bundesbahn used its new "City-Bahn" train type for the first time on this line (Cologne - Meinerzhagen) . From 1984 to 1999, locomotive-hauled trains with class 218 machines and n-wagons in a pure orange-pebble gray pop paint scheme were used .

Since May 1998 the "Oberbergische Bahn" has had the line designation RB 25. From 1999 to 2014 the route was operated with trains of the Bombardier Talent type (class 644).

Work at the train stations

In order to reactivate passenger traffic on the section between Marienheide and Meinerzhagen, old tracks were demolished in Meinerzhagen station in 2012 and two new tracks and three points were built. The Gummersbach train station as well as the Engelskirchen and Overath train stations have also been completely modernized and the platforms newly laid out. Up until the end of November 2012 there was also expansion work on the further course of the Volme route after Kierspe in the direction of Oberbrügge. Deutsche Bahn AG invested around 16.5 million euros in this track renewal. Further measures would also be the expansion and securing of level crossings and the preparation of the stops and stations in Meinerzhagen, Kierspe and Halver-Oberbrügge.

Most of the work at Meinerzhagen train station has been completed since December 2017; there are no binding dates for Kierspe and Halver-Oberbügge.

In 2018, the Gummersbach-Dieringhausen station was completely renovated and modernized and the Dieringhausen West-Dieringhausen section was expanded to double-track.

The reactivation of the Volmetalbahn is an essential project within the regional program Oben an der Volme . In addition to the line work carried out by Deutsche Bahn AG, the four participating municipalities Meinerzhagen, Kierspe, Halver (for the Oberbrügge station) and Schalksmühle are also making the area around the stations more attractive. In addition, the stations will also have stops with parking space for the Volmetal cycle path, which is also part of the regional project. In this context, the two central bus stations in Meinerzhagen and Kierspe will also be redesigned to link rail and bus traffic.
