history

In 1885 Honrath had 54 residents who lived in nine houses.

According to an address book from 1901, a pastor , two teachers , five farm workers , a carpenter , a bricklayer , a shoemaker , a small trader and a landlord lived in Honrath .

Until July 31, 1969, the place belonged to the previously independent municipality Wahlscheid .

The ore mine Aurora was located between Honrath and Hoven in the Jexmühlenbach valley, where modest ore mining took place in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Several ore veins were exposed that carried lead, zinc and copper ores. A deep tunnel, which was set up below Jexmühle, opened up these deposits. Around 1855 the mine was operated by the Honrath trade union for a few years. At that time 60 tons of lead ore were produced. At the Aggerhütte, the Honrath trade union maintained a processing plant; it was connected to the Aurora and Volta pits via a railroad, which was used to transport the piles of the mine for processing. From 1904 to 1909, the Aurora ore deposits were then re-examined. At that time the mine was owned by the stock corporation for mining, lead and zinc production in Stolberg and in Westphalia. The investigation work did not reveal any new excavations that could be mined. Today, numerous old spoil heaps and filled mine shafts (Pingen) are evidence of the former ore mining in this area. A detailed description of the mining history can be found in the publication "Metal ore mining in the lower Aggertal"

On October 29, 1923 Honrath became the scene of the so-called Overath Potato War . Members of a vigilante group , mainly farmers and miners from Overath and the surrounding area, gathered at the Honrath train station to prevent a special train from Cologne from continuing to Overath. In the train that the Cologne railway administration had used under the motto special train to buy potatoes , they suspected other hungry people from Cologne who had looted whole truckloads of potatoes, food and cattle in the vicinity of Overath in the days before. With the rifle at the ready, Overather forced the driver of the special train to return to Cologne. The train service to Overath was suspended for a few days.
