Location of Wahlscheid in North Rhine-Westphalia

Wahlscheid is a district of Lohmar in the Rhein-Sieg district in North Rhine-Westphalia . Until August 1, 1969, Wahlscheid was an independent municipality, which also includes today's Lohmar districts of Agger , Dahlhaus , Durbusch , Hausen , Höffen , Honrath , Hove , Mackenbach , Münchhof , Neuhonrath , Oberstehöhe and Scheid .

Location and description

The place is about six kilometers north of the main town Lohmar directly on the federal highway 484 . Wahlscheid is also known as the "gateway to the Bergisches Land" due to its location in the lower Aggertal. Wahlscheid is largely located in the Agger valley and is surrounded by small towns and villages on the mountain slopes that formerly belonged to the former municipal Wahlscheid. Schiffarth , Scheid , Spechtsberg and Birken are on the right-hand side of the Agger, close to Wahlscheid. To the left of the Agger are Stolzenbach , Mackenbach , Kirchbach , Weeg , Münchhof , Dorpmühle, Schönenberg , Höffen , Hohn and Neuhonrath near Wahlscheid. Among other things, due to the commitment of the traffic and beautification association Wahlscheid founded in 1953, the village was awarded several top placements in the competitions “Our village should be more beautiful” and “ Our village has a future ”: 1999 and 2005 (together with Herchen ) as the winner in Competition of the Rhein-Sieg district.

Waters

The Agger is the largest body of water that flows through Wahlscheid. Its course clearly shows the human interventions. Most of the bank is paved, especially along the Hammerwerk road in Wahlscheid's north. Along the footpath and cycle path from Wahlscheid - Pastoratsweg to Neuhonrath, in the forest opposite Auel Castle - the Agger flows naturally and not in a limited way. Their banks show different characteristics, a meandering of the water is possible here. The Hohner Bach is the only tributary of the Agger that flows directly through the center of Wahlscheid. It flows into the Agger from the left. The Steffensbach flows as a right tributary in the north of Wahlscheid to the Agger. In the southern Wahlscheid and south of Wahlscheid the Kirchbach, Mackenbach, Atzenbach and Stolzenbach flow as left tributaries of the Agger. The Oberscheider Bach flows into the Agger as a right tributary near Schiffarth . The Maarbach flows into the Agger from the left between Neuhonrath (Auelchen) and Wahlscheid. At Schloss Auel , the Aueler Bach flows into the Agger on the right.

The Aggerverband, based in Gummersbach , is responsible for the Agger and its tributaries .

history

Wahlscheid is mentioned for the first time in 1121 in a document from Abbot Kuno I of Siegburg Abbey.

Wahlscheid municipality

After the Kingdom of Prussia took over the Rhineland , Wahlscheid became a municipality and at the same time the seat of the mayor's office , which was renamed "Amt Wahlscheid" in 1927. Wahlscheid later became an office-free municipality.

In 1967, 4,837 people lived in 23 places in the municipality of Wahlscheid. Of these, 358 were employed in agriculture and forestry, 794 in manufacturing and 619 in the service sector. 913 outbound commuters were compared to 86 inbound commuters. In 1967 there were public institutions: 4 elementary schools, a sports field, a gym, 4 libraries and a community care station.

In the course of the municipal reorganization , this was assigned to the municipality of Lohmar on August 1, 1969 (since 1991: City of Lohmar). The former municipality of Wahlscheid comprised around 100 hamlets and individual farms.

Economic history

In the area of Wahlscheid mining was already practiced in Roman times . In particular lead, copper and zinc ores as well as pyrites were mined recently. The ore mining around Wahlscheid experienced a modest heyday again in the middle of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. With the closure of the Lüderich ore mine in 1978, mining in the Bergisches Erzrevier ended. In the former municipality of Wahlscheid there are remains of numerous ore mines and medieval smelting plants, which, like the Pilot pit closed in 1917 (located in Kirchbachsiefen), are to be made accessible to the public again.

In the period from 1853 to 1881, 998 tons of copper ore, 71.4 tons of lead ore, 190 tons of zinc blende and 120 tons of pyrite were produced there. The last operating period, beginning in the 20th century, produced 31 tons of copper ore, 82 tons of lead ore and 41 tons of zinc blende. Another more important copper ore mine - the Schubert mine - was located in the Naafbachtal, near the village of Bloch. Many residents of Wahlscheid and the surrounding towns found employment in the mines for a time. A detailed description of the history of these mines can be found in the publication Metallerz-Bergbau im lower Aggertal .

In addition, shipbuilding used to be carried out in Wahlscheid . In small shipyards in the area between the Aggerknick at today's nature school Wahlscheid and the district of Schiffahrth, Aggernachen that were up to 15 meters long and z. B. were used on the Rhine for ferry operations between Bonn and Beuel and between Cologne and Deutz .

Election 2021

Wahlscheid 2021 is a project of the Lohmar city administration to determine the wishes and ideas of Wahlscheider citizens regarding the development of their place as part of the Wahlscheider workshop talks. The background to these discussions was a discussion in which electoral voters had criticized an imbalance in the road renovation between Lohmar and Wahlscheid.

Churches

In 1166 there was a Romanesque church in Wahlscheid, which was probably built around 1000, but has not been preserved. In 1557 Wahlscheid, like the neighboring communities Honrath , Seelscheid and Volberg (today: Rösrath -Hoffnungsthal), became Protestant . In 1813 the old church was demolished and work began on the new Bartholomew Church as it can be seen today. The west tower dates from 1870. When the artist Hermann Gottfried created the stained glass windows in the 1960s , this modern art at their church was hotly debated by the voters. The Catholic Church of St. Bartholomew in the valley was built in 1965 and received a sculpture of its namesake from the Protestant church as a gift.

Auel Castle

Auel Castle

To the north of Wahlscheid is Auel Castle, first mentioned in a document in 1391 as a moated castle under Peter van Auel . It received its current three-wing shape in the baroque period. In 1811 Napoleon was a guest at Auel Castle during an army inspection. It has been run as a hotel since 1951 .

Aggertal

Wahlscheid is due to its location in this scenic area, described as the “Pearl of the Aggertal”. The landscape garden Aggerbogen is a natural meadow landscape on the Agger.

Aggerschlösschen

The Aggerschlösschen restaurant, which was built at the beginning of the 20th century, is located directly on the K39 concrete / wooden bridge, which was inaugurated in 2014. Due to its location directly on the Agger or the landscape garden Aggerbogen and the view of Wahlscheid, the restaurant is a destination for excursions.

Facilities

Evangelical retirement home Wahlscheid (Mathildenstift)

Founder couple Mathilde and Wilhelm Frackenpohl 1903

On May 27, 1903, Wilhelm Frackenpohl from Kreuznaaf donated a house on Wahlscheider Strasse in Aggerhof and 10,000 marks to the Protestant parish in memory of his wife Mathilde.

In 1951, under Pastor Fritz Pleuger, it was decided not to restore the Mathildenstift, which had been damaged in the war, but to build a retirement home at a new location on the Rösemig. A first extension was built in 1959, followed by a dormitory for sisters and employees in 1961. 1969 was the construction of the managing director's house. A second extension followed in 1972. 1981 was a new building and renovation with 112 seats. In 1982 the retirement home visitor group was founded. In 1986 34 apartments for the elderly were built. In 1994 the cafeteria was added and the farewell chapel was added in 1996. Another new building and renovation followed in 2003, and a festival week was held to mark the centenary. In 2004 an elevator tower was built on Wahlscheider Strasse. In 2008 the retirement home in Lohmar was put into operation. Today the Evangelical Retirement Home Wahlscheid has 112 places and is the largest employer in Wahlscheid.

The house is still lovingly called "Mathildenstift" today.

The nature school is supported by the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU). As part of the Regionale 2010 , the nature school is a location for the “Bridging Nature and Education” project, in which nature-related educational offers, especially for young people, are planned. The conceptual focus is on self-awareness of nature.

There was controversy in the press as to whether the building of the Aggerbogen nature school may remain in the nature reserve or must be outside. The decision was made in the context of a structural expansion in favor of the old location in the nature reserve.

regional customs

The fair organized by the local associations takes place over three days. After the introductory disco event in the Wahlscheid forum, the beginning on Saturday is an ecumenical morality service on the forecourt of the Evangelical Church of St. Bartholomew. An extensive flea market takes place on the following Sunday . The highlight of the fair is fair Monday (last Monday in August), which in Wahlscheid is the “highest holiday” of the year. Find there according to the traditional car parade with groups on foot, the choice for the separator of the "replacement" for the Rose Monday parade represents the barrels of Schörreskarrenrennens instead. The WDR took over the coverage of this race for a while and the celebrities run included personalities from radio and television among the participants. After the fireworks on Mondays at the end of the fair, the fair guy is ritually burned.

Culture

Choirs

There are three choirs in Wahlscheid, the male choir Frohsinn Höffen e. V., the male choir Wahlscheid 1879 e. V., which was renamed in 2015 to the joint choir, as it sings mixed in the meantime, and the church choir Wahlscheid (formerly the Protestant singing circle). The Höffen men's choir has existed since 1913, the Wahlscheid joint choir since 1879 and the Wahlscheid church choir since 1969. The latter was originally founded as a women's choir, but has been singing since 2008.

Evangelical children's church choir Wahlscheid

The KiKiChor of the Evangelical Church Community of Wahlscheid has existed since 1982. It comprises several groups from mini-choirs to youth choirs, Orff groups, bands to theater groups and circus workshops.

The musical work with children and young people is one of the focal points of the ev. Wahlscheid parish. In addition to choir and Orff groups, there is a community band, dance groups and instrumental groups. This thematic focus is on the academic school music training of the youth leader.

Another focus is closely linked to music and is theater-pedagogical work. Children and young people study a musical every year in mixed-age groups. The musical work also includes sewing costumes, building backdrops, lighting and sound technology and PR work, to which the young people are introduced with the support of their parents.

Parental work is also a component of child and youth work. It ranges from assistance in problematic family or school situations to the parents' choir, which meets weekly.

For young people from the age of 12, there is the “Rumpelkammer” youth group, which, under the guidance of older young people or from parents, runs a computer group or cooking, handicraft and dance groups.

In 2007 the choir celebrated its 25th anniversary. On May 1, 2010, the choir opened the Lohmar Culture Days with an open-air spectacle in the Aggerbogen Langschauftsgarten together with the Aggerbogen Nature School and the Lohmar Cultural Office.

Traditional rivalry from Wahlscheid to Lohmar

A great rivalry has developed between the former municipality of Wahlscheid and the former municipality of Lohmar, which is not based on the usual competition between neighboring towns, but is based on the local reorganization and the associated loss of Wahlscheid's independence. In culture, this is reflected in the fair, where the electoral officers target the people of Lohmar sometimes ironically, sometimes cynically and viciously. In everyday life, too, the electoral voters still see themselves as independent, this is also demonstrated by stickers and T-shirts with confessions that they are electoral voters.
