Johanna von Honrath (born August 10, 1770 in Cologne , † November 25, 1823 in Timisoara ) was Beethoven's first love and later wife of the Austrian general Carl von Greth (1754–1827).

Life

Maria Johanna Sibilla von Honrath - her full name - was born on August 10, 1770 in Cologne and baptized on the same day in the parish of St. Aposteln am Neumarkt . Her parents were Bernhard Joseph von Honrath, "Receptor Supremus" (supreme tax collector ) in Kerpen and Lummersheim, and his wife Maria Gertrud von Honrath, née. Hackenbroichs.

Beethoven's childhood friend Franz Gerhard Wegeler writes about the composer's youth: “His and Stephan von Breuning’s first love was Miss Jeanette d'Honrath from Cologne, Neumarkt Nro. 19. (current home of the master builder Mr. Biercher), who often spent a few weeks in the von Breuning family in Bonn. She was a beautiful, lively blonde, of a pleasant education and friendly disposition, who enjoyed music and had a pleasant voice. So she teased our friend several times by reciting a song known at the time:

To part with you today
and not be able to prevent this,
Is too sensitive for my heart!

Because the favored rival was the Austrian advertising captain in Cologne, Carl Greth, who married the d'Honrath and died on October 15, 1827 as Lieutenant Field Marshal, owner of Infantry Regiment No. 23, Commandant of Timisoara, etc. "

She married Carl Greth in autumn 1795. The couple had one child and last lived in Timisoara , where Greth became the fortress commander in February 1823. The couple were buried in the Piarist Church of the Holy Cross .
