Altviller (German Altweiler ) is a French commune with 586 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Forbach-Boulay-Moselle and the municipality association Saint-Avold Synergie .

geography

Altviller is about five kilometers south-east of Saint-Avold , near the border with Saarland at an altitude of 270 m above sea level. The upper Nied Allemande (German Nied) flows through the south of the municipality . 72 hectares of the municipal area are wooded ( Rischstuden and Laengerbusch in the west, Liebusch in the north, Bois des Saints ( Heiligenbusch ) in the east).

Neighboring communities of Altviller are Lachambre in the northeast, Vahl-Ebersing in the south, Folschviller in the southwest and Valmont in the northwest.

history

In 1221 the name Altviller appears for the first time in a deed of donation from the Wadgassen Abbey . In 1801 there was also the spelling Atteviller

Attractions

The Saint-Rémi church is dedicated to Remigius of Reims . It was built from 1808 on the foundations of an older church that had been built in 1725. The church belongs to the Roman Catholic parish of Notre-Dame du Vahl, which is part of the diocese of Metz .

Economy and Infrastructure

Since the 1980s, Altviller has become a residential community for commuters from the industrial and commercial areas mainly to the north. There is a bakery and small craft shops in the village itself. There are five farms in the municipality (cereal cultivation, horse and poultry breeding).

The nearby town of Saint-Avold enables cheap supraregional transport connections by road and train ( Autoroute A4 , train lines to Metz, Forbach and Saarbrücken).
