Voimhaut ( Lorraine Wémhaut ) is a municipality with 253 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department , about 22 kilometers east of Metz .

The village was first mentioned as Waimwalz in 1316 , then Wamhevalz (1421). In 1552 it was occupied and annexed by France, which was recognized in the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 .

From 1871 to 1918 Voimhaut belonged temporarily to the German Empire , but French remained the official and colloquial language. 1915-18 the German authorities renamed the place in Wainwalz .

During the Nazi occupation (1940-44) , the German authorities named the village Weintal .
