Freyming-Merlebach ( German Freimingen-Merlenbach ) is a French commune with 12,818 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2016 Lorraine ). Freyming-Merlebach belongs to the Forbach-Boulay-Moselle arrondissement and is the capital of the Freyming-Merlebach canton . The inhabitants call themselves Freymingeois and Merlebachois .

In the past, coal mining was operated in the place ( Lothringer Bergwerke ). At the end of the 1950s, as in other European countries, a protracted coal crisis began .

Freyming-Merlebach is on the border with Germany . Großrosseln is on the German side of the border .

history

Freyming-Merlebach was created in 1971 by merging the localities of Freyming and Merlebach. From 1871 to 1918 the area was Reichsland Alsace-Lorraine ; with the Treaty of Versailles it came back to France. From 1920 to 1935 the Saar area was under French administration. In September 1939, shortly after the start of World War II, the residents were evacuated. From June 1940 to the end of 1944 the area was occupied by the Wehrmacht ; it was liberated in the course of the battle for Metz .

Attractions

Wieselstein
  • The Wieselstein ( Le rocher du Wieselstein ) is a massive boulder that is reminiscent of a menhir and around which there are many legends. It is six meters high, four meters wide and was the meeting place of the miners during the great strikes of 1920 because a speaker was clearly visible on it for the crowd. It lies between the suburb (cité) Cuvelette and the Reumaux mine .
