Longeville-lès-Saint-Avold (German Lubeln ) is a French commune with 3,666 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region ( Lorraine until 2016 ). It belongs to the Forbach-Boulay-Moselle arrondissement .

geography

Longeville is located in a valley on the edge of the Warndt , four kilometers west of Saint-Avold and about nine kilometers from the border with Saarland .

The village of Kleindal ( Kleinthal ) to the west also belongs to the municipality .

history

The place was first mentioned in 1180 as Longavilla and has belonged to France since 1766. From 1871 to 1918 it belonged again temporarily to the German Empire and was called Lubeln.

During the Nazi occupation (1940-1944) Longeville-lès-Saint-Avold was renamed Langsdorf by the German authorities .

The Glandern Abbey , which was closed in 1791 and from which the castle-like convent building has been preserved, is located in the municipal area and is now used as a spa and recreation home. Its oldest parts date from the early 15th century. The local coat of arms of Longeville corresponds to the historical coat of arms of the Benedictine abbey .
