Créhange ( German Kriechingen , Lorraine Krischingen ) is a French commune with 3868 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ).

geography

The municipality of Créhange is located on the Deutsche Nied , about ten kilometers southwest of Saint-Avold .

history

The place was first mentioned in 1121 as Krichinga and was later the seat of the county of Kriechingen . Ruins of the castle of the Counts of Kriechingen have been preserved in the village today.

The baroque author Johann Michael Moscherosch (1601–1669) was bailiff of the Counts of Kriechingen from 1631–1634.

In 1793, Créhange was occupied and annexed by France, which was recognized in the Peace of Lunéville in 1801 .

1871–1918 Créhange was temporarily part of the German Empire .
