history
The city emerged on March 28, 2005 from the merger of the Shi Shimodate ( 下 館 市 , -shi ) with the Machi Akeno ( 明 野 町 , -machi ), Kyōwa ( 協和 町 , -machi ) and Sekijō ( 関 城 町 , -machi ) of the Makabe-gun ( 真 壁 郡 ).
