Hokota ( Japanese 鉾 田 市 , -shi ) is a city in Japan in Ibaraki Prefecture .

Hokota lies south of Mito and north of Kashima on the Pacific Ocean .

history

The city of Hokota was founded on October 11, 2005 from the former Asahi, Hokota, and Taiyo communities.

The natural disaster of the Tōhoku earthquake on March 11, 2011 with the subsequent tsunami claimed one person in Hokota. 98 residential buildings were completely destroyed and 742 others were partially destroyed.
