Kashima ( Japanese 鹿 嶋 市 , - shi ) is a city in Japan in Ibaraki Prefecture , about 100 km from Tokyo .
geography
The city is east of Tokyo south of Mito on the Pacific Ocean .
history
The natural disaster of the Tōhoku earthquake on March 11, 2011 with the subsequent tsunami left two dead in Kashima. 511 residential buildings were completely destroyed and 3,354 others were partially destroyed.
Attractions
A special attraction is the Kashima-jingū , a Shinto shrine .
Sports
Kashima is home to the Kashima Antlers football team from the J. League , Japan's top division (the Antlers are record champions there) and was the venue for several games at the 2002 World Cup (including Germany - Ireland, score 1: 1).
