geography

Diebling is located about nine kilometers west of Sarreguemines and ten kilometers southeast of Forbach , near the border with Saarland at an altitude of 240 m above sea level in the valley of the Strichbach , which, like the Altwiesenbach in the south of the municipality, flows a few kilometers east into the Saar .

The area of the community Diebling is characterized by arable and meadow land as well as orchards, in the south there are larger forest areas with the forests of Rocketalien, Buschwald and Dachshubelwald .

Neighboring communities of Diebling are Tenteling in the north, Nousseviller-Saint-Nabor in the north-east, Metzing in the east, Guebenhouse in the south, Loupershouse in the south-west, Farschviller in the west and Théding in the north-west.

history

The place name comes from a Franconian warrior who belonged to a colony settling in the Strichbach valley. About Dubelange (1272) and Duebling (end of the 16th century) the spelling of the name changed to Diebling - in the time under German administration (from 1870 to 1918 and from 1940 and 1944) the village was called Dieblingen .

St. Wendelin Church

It is believed that there was a simple oratory or chapel in honor of St. Wendelin as early as the 11th or 12th century . The founding of the brotherhood of St. Wendelin in 1423 at the latest shows that a chapel existed, which at times was even a place of pilgrimage. The residents of Diebling were part of the parish in Tenteling and so they walked the two-kilometer-long Kirchweg to the neighboring village higher up for a very long time . It was not until 1775 that the community in Diebling got its first pastor. The current church dates from 1826. There are neither building plans nor invoices, so it is assumed that the residents of Diebling contributed to the church building according to their skills. The stones were broken northwest of the village center on the road to Ebring , the wood came from the municipality's own forest and the municipality also paid for the transport. Two of the three bells came from the old chapel. In 1838 an organ was procured. The glass windows were made in a Munich workshop between 1890 and 1904. Twice - in 1917 and 1943 - the bells were confiscated and melted down by the Germans; those that ring today were cast in 1957.
