history
In 1846 an ironworks was founded on the site of today's Stiring-Wendel . The industrialist family De Wendel built a church, a school and housing for the workers. In 1857 Napoleon III appointed the place by decree to the city .
In 1897 the hut ceased operations and many residents left Stiring-Wendel. But the upswing in coal mining led to a renewed increase in population. In 1957 Stiring-Wendel had 16,000 inhabitants compared to 1,900 in 1857.
At the turn of the millennium, the era of hard coal also ended and the mines were shut down.
