Château-Rouge (German Rothendorf ) is a French commune with 292 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ).

geography

The place is located in the north of the historic Lorraine region , 500 meters north of Oberdorff and three kilometers from the German-French border.

history

The community was first mentioned in 1148 as Ruchenestorf . Other spellings were Ruchmestorf (1179), Rodendorp (1316), Roedendorff (1484), Rudendorf (1544), Roudendorff (1627), Rodendorf (1779), Château Rouge ou Rothdorf (1793), Rudendorff (19th century).

In 1158, the Duke of Lorraine signed the income from the village to the Sainte-Croix de Bouzonville Abbey . In 1341 an Aubert von Rodendorff sealed a peace treaty between his brothers-in-law Arnold and Thierry von Felsberg and the Bishop of Metz. The family von Rodendorff is mentioned for the first time with this mention, therefore a castle must have already existed in the place at this time. In the 14th century the rule came by inheritance to those of Baldering, de Rapviller and de Craincourt. In the 15th century the Lords of Brandscheid acquired the castle and, as a result of marriages, later the Eltz zu Blieskastel and the Metternich proportionally, from the 18th century Eltz-Rodendorf alone, who also owned Freisdorf and Bourscheid Castle .

The castle burned down in 1935.
