The Piarist Church of the Holy Cross ( Romanian Biserica Piariștilor Înălțarea Sfintei Cruci ) is a Roman Catholic church in Strada Victor Babeș No. 1 in the first district of Cetate ( German  Inner City ) of the western Romanian city of Timișoara ( German  Timişoara ).

history

A medieval church and then a mosque from the time of the Ottoman occupation already existed on the site of the church . After the city was recaptured , a church dedicated to St. Nepomuk was built here between 1733 and 1736 .

Following a decree by Emperor Josef II , the Piarist Order took over this church and the monastery of the banned Jesuits in 1788 , where they ran a grammar school . In 1909, a Piarist high school with the Piarist Church was built here according to plans by Alexander Baumgarten and László Székely under the supervision of Arnold Merbl . The old church was demolished in 1911 after the monks moved 261 skeletons from the old church's crypt to the new church. Among them were the physical remains of Carl von Greth , the former commander of the city, his wife Johanna von Honrath , as well as Austrian soldiers who had defended the city during the siege of 1848 . The new church was dedicated to the Holy Cross . The altar of the church comes from Munich.

The monks, whose order was banned from teaching in 1948 by the communist regime , secretly devoted themselves to their studies in the church at that time.

The liturgies are dedicated to Saints Rita of Cascia and Anthony of Padua and are held in Hungarian , Romanian and German .
