The parish church Mariae Birth ( Romanian Biserica romano-catolică Iosefin ) is a Roman Catholic church and a listed historical building on Bulevardul Regele Carol I No. 15 in the IV. District Iosefin ( German Josefstadt ) of the western Romanian city of Timișoara ( German Timişoara ).
history
The Roman Catholic Church in the Iosefin district is the oldest church in the city after the Timișoara Cathedral and the predecessor of today's Piarist Church of the Holy Cross . It was built from 1772 to 1774 in the Baroque style and consecrated in December 1775 by Leonhardus Rothenbach on behalf of the bishop of the Csanád diocese , Franz Anton Engl Graf von Wagrain , on the feast of the birth of Mary on September 8th. It is believed that the architect came from Vienna . Until the establishment of its own parish churches, this church was also responsible for the Roman Catholic believers in the neighboring districts of Mehala (until 1888) and Elisabetin (until 1919).
During the Hungarian Revolution , the tower of the church was particularly badly damaged in the course of the siege of 1849 , after which it was demolished in 1861 and replaced with a higher tower according to plans by the architect Johann von Schuster . The roof of the new tower was covered with sheets of copper and zinc. The tower clock was the first and until 1838 only public clock in the quarter. The bells of the church were made in November 1923 and come from the workshop of Antal Novotny .
In November 1889 repairs and structural changes took place again. Further work in 1928 and 1929 dealt with the church crypt, which had been in use since 1774, and in 1935 the architect Lázár turned his attention to the main gate and the building facades. The most recent renovation of the church was carried out in 2010 according to plans by the architect König .
description
On the main baroque altar made by László Szántó from 1935 is a portrait of the Virgin Mary from the late eighteenth century. The benches are by the same artist. In the inner courtyard of the church there is the oldest stone statue of Saint Nepomuk , made in 1723 , which is also the oldest monument in the city.
The two wooden statues on the side of the main altar, depicting Saint Joachim and Saint Anne , date before 1778. The two side altars in Baroque style were created in honor of Francis of Assisi and Saint Anne. The third altar, in Romanesque style, dates from 1895 and was built for the veneration of the Sacred Heart of Jesus . A glass painting shows Saint Joseph . The iron cross near the church dates from 1832.
organ
The organ of the parish church was made by Franz Kecskés , who previously worked as an organ builder in the workshop of Carl Leopold Wegenstein . The instrument was overhauled by Walter Kindl in 1980 .
