The parish church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus ( Romanian Biserica Parohială Preasfânta Inimă a lui Isus ) is a Roman Catholic church on the Piața Nicolae Bălcescu in the III. District Elisabetin ( German  Elisabethstadt ) of the western Romanian city Timișoara ( German  Timişoara ).

history

Interior of the church, 2013

In 1899 the committee for the construction of the church was formed. The land on which the church is located was donated by Vilmos Mühle . Bishop Alexander III. Dessewffy donated 50,000 crowns to build the church.

The construction of the church in neo-Gothic style based on plans by Karl Salkovics began on June 12, 1912, but completion was delayed due to the First World War until 1919. Bishop Julius Glattfelder was consecrated in the same year.

Originally, the church was under the Josefstädter parish church, but was raised to the status of an independent parish on September 15, 1919.

description

The architectural style of the church is reminiscent of the Viennese Votive Church . The five altars were carved from wood by Ferdinand Stullesser in Gothic style.

organ

The organ of the parish church was the last instrument built by the organ building company Leopold Wegenstein's sons in Timișoara.

Construction was delayed in 1939, on the one hand because of the outbreak of the Second World War , on the other hand because of the very cold winter that year, due to which the ship with components from Germany for the organ was stuck in the ice on the Danube .

Ever since the completion of the church in 1919, its management had been trying to get a new organ, until in 1939 the most modern instrument of Timișoara could finally be installed. The completion of the organ was hampered by war and lack of money, so the organ has had to do without a "real" prospectus until today . Instead of the prospectus pipes, a Wagner from Sântana carved individual pipe shapes from wooden boards, which still exist in the prospectus today. The organ has an electric play and key action and a wheeled table.
