Elisabetin ( German  Elisabethstadt , Hungarian Erzsébetváros ) is a historic quarter and the III. District of the western Romanian city of Timișoara . The district covers an area of 668 hectares.

history

The present city district Elisabetin was founded after the reconquest of Temeswar from the Ottomans by Eugene of Savoy between 1716 and 1718. In the beginning the community was called Alte Mayerhöfe ( Romanian Maierele Vechi ) and was laid out as a rural settlement around a wooden church. The houses typically had larger orchards and vegetable gardens. The place name was a demarcation to the neighboring Neue Mayerhöfen , today's Josefstadt .

Originally the Alte Mayerhöfe were two separate districts, these were the German Mayerhöfe ( Romanian Maierele Germane ) and the Wallachian Mayerhöfe ( Romanian Maierele Valahe ). The latter were also known as Romanian Mayerhöfe ( Romanian Maierele Române ). The German settlement was to the left and right of today's Strada Romulus, the Romanian around today's Piața Axente Sever. The border ran roughly along today's Strada Independenței. In Hungarian, both parts were collectively referred to as Majorok . After the Neue Mayerhöfe finally became the Josefstadt in 1773 , the simplified name Mayerhöfe also became common in German .

Over the years, the two parts of the Mayerhöfe grew closely together. Today's Piața Nicolae Bălcescu , then known as Telekház tér ( German  Grundhausplatz ), developed into the common center .

After the incorporation to Timişoara in 1890, the city district was renamed Majorkülváros ( German  Mayervorstadt ) and grew rapidly. On May 25, 1896 he was finally given the name Erzsébetkülváros ( German Elisabethvorstadt or suburb Elisabethstadt ) in honor of Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary . A few years later this was simplified to Erzsébetváros ( German Elisabethstadt ). The naming after Empress Elisabeth was analogous to the Budapest district of the same name , which had already been renamed in 1882.

In the interwar period , the name was changed by the Romanian administration to Principesa Elisabeta ( German  Princess Elisabeth ), often shortened to Elisabeta . After the temporary name Nicolae Bălcescu in the socialist era , the current name is Elisabetin .
