The Cephalonia "Airport Anna Pollatou " (Engl. Kefalonia International Airport ) is the international airport of the Greek island of Kefalonia and is located southeast of the island's capital Argostoli in the village of Milies. The airport is only used for civil aviation. In addition to a scheduled connection to Athens , it is mainly served by charter airlines in the summer months.

history

The old (now demolished) terminal of the airport

Kefalonia Airport was opened in 1971 and was only served by Olympic Airlines with YS-11 planes from Athens, previously the island could only be reached by ferry and helicopter service (Airtaxi) . A special feature was a flight connection that connected several Ionian islands and was therefore called "Leoforio" (Greek for bus ). It existed until around 2005. In the 1980s, the terminal was built and the runway was extended. During this time, Aero Lloyd also offered flights from Frankfurt from Germany for the first time . The airport was named after Odysseus, around 2010 the airport was renamed after Anna Pollatou, an athlete from Kefalonia who had had an accident.

In 2017, the airport and 14 others in Greece were leased to Fraport for 40 years ; the Greek state remains the property owner and retains a 28.5% stake in the operating business. In addition to the purchase price of € 1.234 billion for the airports, the company committed to invest a further € 400 million by 2021. In Kefalonia, the old passenger terminal was torn down and a new one was built in two steps.

Infrastructure

The airport has a tower and a terminal. The transfer into the city takes place almost exclusively via taxis and rental cars, buses only run on flights to and from Argostoli. Car rental companies have offices right at the airport.

Airlines and Destinations

Several airlines, especially smaller regional airlines, low-cost airlines and holiday airlines, fly to and from destinations in Europe, primarily from Austria , from the British-speaking area and within Greece.
