The Kos-Hippocrates airport (IATA: KGA, ICAO: LGKO) ( Greek Κρατικός Αερολιμένας Κω, Ιπποκράτης ) is a Greek airport on the island of Kos .
Location and transport links
The international airport of the island of Kos is relatively central near the small town of Andimachia . It is about 26 kilometers from the town of Kos in the east of the island and 18 kilometers from the town of Kefalos in the west of the island and is built at an altitude of about 130 meters above sea level.
Buses of KTEL run up to eleven times a day between the airport and the town of Kos on the port of Mastichari . Kefalos and Kardamena are also served several times a day .
history
Kos- Hippocrates Airport opened on April 4, 1964. At that time, the runway was only 1200 meters long. The airport helped promote tourism on the island.
In 1973 the runway was doubled to 2,400 meters in length to allow larger charter aircraft to land. The increased number of passengers then made it necessary to rebuild the terminal in 1980.
In 1997, the capacity of Kos Airport was increased significantly with the construction of a new arrival terminal (right next to the departure terminal). Previously, the entire passenger volume was handled in today's departure terminal (about the same size as the arrival terminal), so that there were queues far in front of the building in the parking lot at peak times.
The only runway designation for Kos Airport was changed from '33' and '15' to '32' and '14' between 2005 and 2006. This is related to the variation , cf. Runway .
After the takeover by Fraport, the runway was restored and other minor changes were made to make passengers more comfortable.
Fraport Greece is currently building a new terminal with an expected 12 new check-in counters and five security gates. A new airport fire brigade is also being built.

Facilities
Runway 32/14
The island airport Kos has a 2390 meter long runway. The runway is not equipped with an ILS instrument landing system from either approach direction (32/14) and is therefore approached in accordance with visual flight rules or via a radio beacon (VOR / DME). In addition, unlike almost all other Greek airports, Kos airport does not have a taxiway parallel to the runway. The aircraft roll for take-off to the end of the runway, then turn 180 ° on a turning hammer provided for this purpose and take off from there. Most of the runway 32 is used because the wind mostly blows from west to north.
Airport fire brigade
Kos Airport has an airport fire brigade that has three to four fire engines. The fire brigade is right next to the tower.
Aprons and parking positions
There are two aprons. The significantly larger apron has seven parking positions, which can also accommodate large aircraft types such as the Boeing 747-400 (a Boeing 747-400 landed on Kos in summer 2003). On the smaller apron there are mostly smaller aircraft that are parked longer or are privately owned.
Curiosities
There is a Greek chapel on a small hill next to the arrival building; Until about the year 2001 this was well visited by tourists, as the best view of the airport was possible from here. Due to the changed security situation, access to the Kirchberg and to the chapel itself was then closed to the general public.
