Kozani ( Greek Κοζάνη ( f. Sg. )) Is a town and municipality in northern Greece . It is the capital of the Western Macedonia region .

history

Kozani was founded by Christian settlers after the Turkish rulers of the Macedonian plains withdrew to the mountains. The safe location of the city soon attracted other Christians who had been driven out of Epirus. During the 17th and 18th centuries, trade with countries in Central Europe gave the city the opportunity to develop economically.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the Englishman William Martin Leake Kozani toured . He described the city as a collection of 600 to 700 houses as well as a good bazaar and market, which was held every Saturday and visited by both the Ottoman (Turkish) and the Greek population. Leake further reported that Kozani had close trade relations with Germany and Hungary before his stay; Correspondingly wealthy merchants would have had their residence in Kozani. In addition, Kozani would be the more frequent residence of the Greek Orthodox Bishop of Kozani and Servia.

During World War II , Kozani was occupied by the Wehrmacht on April 12, 1941 and remained under German occupation until October 28, 1944, the day of the German withdrawal. During the German occupation, the Bishop of Kozani (and Servia) in particular was a promoter of the Greek resistance against the German occupation forces. Kozani was also the seat of the small Greek resistance organization EKA (Ethniki Kinoniki Amyna).

On May 13, 1995, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 on the Richter scale struck the city and municipality of Kozani.

Population, administration, politics

population

Kozani had a small Jewish community in the early 20th century. The Turkish part of the population, which had settled in Kozani and the surrounding region during the Ottoman occupation from the 14th century, had to leave Kozani and the surrounding region, especially after the Greco-Turkish war . In 1922, 13 Muslim persons were registered in Thessaloniki who were brought to Turkey from the Kozani region or who fled; In 1923 there were 26,610 people. In 1926 all Turkish residents had left Kozani and its region.

administration

Kozani was recognized as a township (dimos) in 1918 . As part of the Greek local government reform in 1997, numerous settlements, communities and localities were incorporated into Kozani. With the administrative reform of 2010 , Kozani was again expanded to include four neighboring communities, which almost doubled the area. The former municipalities from 1997 now form municipal districts, the municipalities from before 1997 municipal districts or local communities that elect their own local representatives. The population figures come from the results of the 2011 census.

Economy, infrastructure and transport

economy

This area is known as the growing area of the most expensive spice in the world, red saffron . The cultivation was introduced in the time of the Ottoman Empire and is still maintained today. Grain and wine were also grown in Kozani. Both saffron and, in particular, grain were brought to Germany and Hungary by land; Accordingly, trade with merchants and their families who had become wealthy developed as early as the 17th century. At the time of William Martin Leake's visit in the early 18th century, trade in Kozani went through a depression; the price of saffron fell from 80 piastres per oka to 40 to 50.

Alfa , an international company in the convenience food sector, has its headquarters in Kozani.

According to WWF, the Agios Dimitrios and Kardia power plants in the region were the power plants with the highest emissions of carbon dioxide per generated kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity in Europe in 2007.

Infrastructure

The city and municipality of Kozani are the seat of the University of Western Macedonia. A technical university (TEI) is also located in Kozani.

traffic

Kozani is an important crossroads of traffic routes in Western Macedonia. The most important mode of transport in private, commercial and public transport is the road. From north to south the national road 3 (European route 65) leads from Florina and Ptolemaida via Kozani to Servia , Elassona and then Larisa in Thessaly . This north-south axis serves traffic to Florina, Kastoria and Macedonia. From the west reaches the national road 20 (European route 90) from Ioannina via Konitsa and Siatista and ensures a connection to Epirus. To the east, the national road 4 leads from Kozani via Veria and Alexandria to Chalkidona in the prefecture of Thessaloniki and then to Thessaloniki itself. Up until the beginning of the 21st century, all these roads were two-lane roads and heavily burdened with the increasing traffic since the 1990s. National road 3 has meanwhile been extensively re-routed and expanded to the north; this road was also partially rebuilt to the south as far as Lake Polyfytos. The national roads 4 and 20, however, remained unchanged, but were relieved by a new west-east motorway, the motorway 2 (Egnatia Odos). Motorway 2 runs in the west via Siatista, Grevena and Metsovo to Ioannina and Igoumenitsa. To the east, the Autobahn 2 leads past the southern slope of the Vermio Mountains to Veria and then to Thessaloniki, Evzoni , Kavala , Chalkidiki and Alexandroupoli . The extensive road connections are used by intercity buses to Florina, Amyndeo , Thessaloniki, Ptolemaida, Veria and Ioannina.

Kozani has a railway connection. A branch of the Thessaloniki – Edessa – Florina line leads from Amyndeo via Ptolemaida to Kozani and ends there. There are three daily connections to Thessaloniki without having to change trains. There are two daily connections to Athens; however, travelers have to change trains at Platy train station.

Kozani Airport

Kozani Airport, also known as "Filippos Airport" ( IATA : KZI , ICAO : LGKZ ) is located 4 kilometers southwest of the city of Kozani and was opened in 1950. The asphalt runway with an orientation of 14/32 is 1,822 m long and 30 m wide. The airport is at an altitude of 628 m (2,059 ft) above sea level . World icon
