Argos Orestiko ( Greek Άργος Ορεστικό ( n. Sg. ); Older name Argos Orestikon Άργος Ορεστικόν) is a Greek municipality in the West Macedonia region . The seat is the small town of the same name with 7,473 inhabitants in 2011, about 8 km south of the city of Kastoria near the southern shore of Lake Kastoria , it is the second largest settlement in the regional district of Kastoria . The upper reaches of the Aliakmonas River runs through the small town .
Recognized as a rural community (kinotita) Chroupista in 1918, it was renamed Argos Orestikon ('Orestisches Argos') in 1926 after an ancient Macedonian settlement of the same name ( ancient Greek Ἄργος Ὀρεστικόν ), a legendary foundation of the Orestes , which was located in the area. In 1946, Argos Orestikon was raised to a municipality (dimos) ; In 1970 the municipality (not the city) was renamed Orestida (older form Orestis ) after the ancient landscape of Orestis , and after the administrative reform in 2010 it was renamed Argos Orestiko. After the merger of the municipality called Orestida in 1970 with the neighboring Ion Dragoumis , the new larger municipality was initially called Orestida, and in 2013 it was renamed Argos Orestiko.
The inhabitants of Argos Orestiko are mainly employed in agriculture. In addition to this, fur processing and finishing , the center of which is the nearby Kastoria, also played a role until the 1990s . Fur and pieces of fur processing was the main source of foreign exchange in western Greece for decades and is still number one in the export sector in western Macedonia despite declining numbers. Although Kastoria is always associated with the Greek fur industry, of the 79 Greek exhibitors at the Saloniki fur fair in 1976 only twelve came from Kastoria, 29 from Siatista , but 21 from Argos Orestiko.
The national road 15 runs through Argos Orestiko from Siatista to Kastoria and then on to the Albanian border at Krystallopigi. In the Argos Orestiko area, the national road 15 has already been replaced by the newly built motorway 15 , which replaces the old national road. After completion it will connect the highway 2 from Ioannina to Thessaloniki near Siatista with Kastoria and the Albanian border. The national airport of Kastoria is also located in the area of Argos Orestiko.
15 kilometers from Argos Orestiko is the so-called stone forest (near the district of Nostimo), whose age has been calculated to be 15 to 20 million years.
Community structure
The 13 municipalities that were independent until 1997 now form the municipality of Argos Orestiko (gr. Dimotiki kinotita ) and 12 local communities (Ez. Topiki kinotita ), each of which elects its own local representative. The population figures come from the results of the 2011 census.
