Heinrich Weltring (born April 18, 1847 in Baccum near Lingen (Ems) , † May 24, 1917 in Thuine ) was a German sculptor who worked with very different materials and created works of impressive beauty and grace, especially for women.

Childhood and youth

Heinrich Weltring grew up as the eldest of five children in poor circumstances on the small Varelmann farm in Baccum. The Messingen-born father Hermann Martin Weltring, born Wobbe, married Anna Maria Weltring in Baccum on August 11, 1846, who owned the farm in Baccum. The father died at the age of 42 and the mother continued to run the farm alone with her underage children. Heinrich was just eight years old at the time. In order to earn some money for the family, he hired himself after school as a servant on the farm of his uncle Clemens Sentker, nee. World ring, in the Ramsel district. When his mother also died in 1868 at the age of 42, the then 21-year-old first tried to continue to run the farm with his four siblings.

It is reported that even as a boy the Heinrich Weltring often made figurative representations out of wood. His ability to carve something was also known to the pastor Caspar Ludwig Schriever (1832–1905) from Plantlünne. With his support, Heinrich Weltring was able to begin a four-year apprenticeship with the Osnabrück sculptor Heinrich Seling (1843–1912) at the age of 23 . He had previously leased the farm to his uncle and tried to take care of the siblings. The youngest brother Clemens later followed his brother and also became a sculptor. In 1874 Heinrich Weltring went to Berlin to the sculptor Heinrich Pohlmann (1839–1917) and attended the Royal Academy of Arts , which was directed by Professor Fritz Schaper .

First work

The first commissioned works in Berlin were a figure of Christ and a statue of Maria-Hilf for the church in Plantlünne. In 1877 he made figures of saints from red sandstone for the columns and sculptures of Adam and Eve for the choir of Halberstadt Cathedral . After the sale of the farm in Baccum, Weltring moved to Karlsruhe in 1880 , where he initially worked for Professor Adolf Heer .

Main creative period

He became known to a wider audience in 1883 with the sculptures “ Bathers or Nymphs ”. Heinrich Weltring found a patron in the factory owner Wilhelm Lorenz in Karlsruhe , who repeatedly brokered orders for him. In this phase of great creativity, the " violin players ", the " Lünner Nativity ", the " Nymphenbrunnen " for the Hereditary Prince Garden in Karlsruhe , a " Feuerbach bust" and other portrait busts of important personalities of his time were created.

Two further successes marked the peak of his artistic work. In 1889 the fisher woman with child on the beach was created for the state art gallery in Karlsruhe and in 1902 the shepherd girl . The latter sculpture was purchased by the city of Karlsruhe and is now in the forest shrub garden. There was an alienation between Weltring and its patron. After that, orders fell. Weltring's financial situation deteriorated noticeably. He was employed as a teacher for modeling at the school for female painters in Karlsruhe and was ultimately only able to earn a living with stone carving. In 1908 Heinrich Weltring returned to his homeland penniless and found a home in Thuine with his brother August Weltring, who was the main teacher of the local elementary school.

Late work

The later works only achieved local significance. During this time he produced various sculptures for the Thuiner parish church, the Thuiner monastery and the cemetery. The two copies of the Pieta by Wilhelm Achtermann also testify to his technical ability. He also made some private works.

Welring's designs for church paintings also met with admiration. Through him, village churches also took part in sacred art, which in turn led to an upswing in church life. In addition to the parish church in Thuine, which Heinrich Weltring artistically designed in the late Gothic style in his old age, it was the Catholic church in his place of birth, Baccum, that received artistic treatment from him in 1910. This painting, which was thoroughly adapted to the architectural style, in turn, like many of his works of art, advantageously deviated from old traditional forms.

The basic color of the vault in the choir was kept in a reddish-brown tone, which developed into light pale red towards the top. Between the ribs of the star vault was a sun surrounded by stars, in which the names of the angel choirs were written in dark letters on a gold background. The roots of the vaulted caps were filled with golden ears and grapes. The vertical walls in the choir were set off in white-gray sandstone blocks up to the base.

Various colored ornaments stood out from the base, which was painted in a carpet-like shade. At the top you could see a wide gold strip with the first letters of the Greek alphabet - Alpha and Omega.

Above the entrance to the sacristy there was an epitaph with the slogan: "Let us step with confidence to the throne of grace that we may receive mercy". The base of the choir arch was made of sturdy blocks. This was the continuation of the arch, executed in tracery stones and ornaments, and brought this to an excellent conclusion to the choir. The vault of the ship was yellow-gray in tone. The images of the twelve apostles were portrayed in the various fields of the vault. The peculiar choice of colors of the vault ribs also looked beautiful, they appeared to be a rarity. The approaches of the vault caps showed rose ornaments, from which rose branches developed decoratively. The ornaments of the window niches consisted of colored foliage with purple buds. The base was painted like a carpet. The work was carried out by the master painter Telgkamp from Freren.

The last work of art Welring was a sandstone nativity scene for the Thuiner village church. Heinrich Weltring died on May 24, 1917 and is buried in the Thuiner Friedhof.
