Heinrich Pohlmann (born October 24, 1839 in Scheventorf near Iburg , † August 30, 1917 in Berlin ) was a German sculptor who is considered a representative of the Berlin School of Sculpture .

Life

Heinrich Pohlmann grew up as the son of a farmer. During his apprenticeship as a carpenter, an adjutant to the King of Hanover noticed Pohlmann's talent in carving. He helped Pohlmann to obtain funding that enabled him to attend the Academy of Arts in Berlin from April 1861 to the end of 1864 . Here he became a student of Fritz Schaper and Albert Wolff . With the support of a grant from the King of Hanover , Pohlmann was able to go on a study trip to Italy in 1866.

Back from Italy in 1867 he set up as a freelance sculptor in Berlin and in 1870 received the imperial commission for an equestrian statuette of Wilhelm I , which was given to him by Empress Augusta in March 1871. Further public orders for monuments and architectural sculptures followed, as well as numerous for portraits and grave sculptures. The grave sculptures in particular, reproduced using the new electroplating technique , were widely used.

In 1917 Pohlmann died in Berlin at the age of 78 and was buried in the old St. Michael cemetery in Neukölln .

Many of his works were destroyed in World War II.
