Christian Heinrich Roller (born March 10, 1839 in Berlin ; † September 6, 1916 there ) was the founder of a German stenography system .

life and work

Heinrich Roller prepared for the profession of drawing teacher during his carpenter apprenticeship. In 1859 in the Berlin Craftsmen's Association he learned the shorthand designed by Arends , which he later improved significantly. His system appeared in 1875 and 17 years later it was already being used in various foreign languages ​​by around 200 associations with a total of 4500 members.

In addition, Roller wrote humorous texts under the pseudonym Roland vom Hochplateau .

Afterlife

His grave is in the cemetery of the Free Religious Congregation in Pappelallee in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg . On November 25, 1925, in the same district of Berlin, Heinersdorfer Strasse, which had been named since its creation in 1866, was renamed Heinrich-Roller-Strasse in his honor. The occasion was the 50th anniversary of Roller's shorthand.

In a commemorative event on the occasion of the meeting of the Working Group of German Stenography Systems from July 14 to 18, 2006, the stenographers paid tribute to the life and work of Heinrich Roller as a person, stenographer, social democrat, free religious, writer and folk poet.
