history

The region is characterized by numerous megalithic relics of the Beaker culture in as the passage grave stone grave in the Kunkenvenne . The imposing complex is one of the most completely preserved in the region. It has a double oval edging 33 meters long and eight meters wide. The chamber is 26.5 m long and up to 4.4 m wide.

The origin of the name Thuine (old: Thuinun, Thunen, Tune ) is rather uncertain. This could contain the old Thun, still known in Low German, synonymous with fence, enclosure (see also the Dutch Tuin for garden). In Thuine it has far been a very old court square in front of Christianization, held at the court under Linden (cherished) was (see: Thie / Thing ). This place was either enclosed or enclosed by a hedge (Low German: Hege ) . That means, there was court peace here, even if one had quarreled beforehand.

Even before the name Thuine was first mentioned in writing, Ludwig the Pious gave Abbot Castus von Visbeck a donation for the churches in the Leri-, Hase- and Frankengau that were subordinate to him. The church in Saxlinga should be excluded. A property with a similar sounding name (the Saßlingen) is located in Thuine, about two kilometers from the town center. Remnants of a wall were found here on a hill. It is uncertain whether the church of Saxlingen or an old castle stood here.

Together with Messingen, Thuine is one of the earliest places mentioned (as early as 836) in the database of Werden Abbey . Thuine was then part of the Venkigau .

Partial view of the monastery

The place Thuine is also through the order of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Martyr Georg and the monastery known, which was founded by Sister M. Anselma Bopp († 1887) to accomplish charitable and social help in the name of God , especially nursing. The first sister house (a small half-timbered house ) was occupied by the Franciscan Sisters in 1857.

Memorial to the crashed Phantom pilots on Mühlenstrasse

On August 25, 1977, a Phantom RF-4C crashed on Klosterweg under circumstances that were never entirely clear. Both pilots died. Citizens of Thuine suspect that they could have saved themselves if they had taken the risk that the machine would crash over Thuine. A memorial was erected at the crash site in 1996 as a reminder.

History of the previous farmers

Thuine used to have five self-governing farmers , three of which were given to Freren:

  • Suttrup (old: Suddorphe , also Susdorphe , later Zuttorpe = Süddorf, south of Thuine) is mentioned around 1000 in the Werdender Urbar as part of the Venkigau. In the Corveyer Heberegister the names Abbo, Sidac, Eligo and Immigo are named as taxpayers. In 1456 the village received permission to build a "nye chapels uppe den olden Zuttorper Kerkhove". The small chapel was built on the border between Suttrup and Lohe on the grounds of the farmer Menke (today Hüsing). It was demolished around 1900. Only the old chapel cross has been erected again at the Suttrup school. Suttrup was transferred to Freren in 1974. The children from Suttrup have been attending primary school in Beesten since 1974.
  • Tan . Landgöding was held in the Lohe (dtsch. Hain ) farmers , where disputes over borders, inheritances, taxes, etc. were decided. An important treasure trove from Roman times was made in Lohe in 1847 . The village was handed over to Freren in 1974 together with Venslage. The Lohe district is part of the Church of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. Together, Suttrup and Lohe form the parish of the Immaculate Conception of Suttrup-Lohe.
  • Venslage (old: Vennislay ) appears in the Werden levy register around 1000. The determiner is uncertain. One assumption is that the name is derived from Feme. That would be a place where the Feme met. The place came to Freren in 1974. Venslage is still assigned to Thuine in terms of church and school.
  • Hollenhorst . The basic word -horst means place, place. The final word hollen could mean good (still included in the word holden today). It was therefore possibly a place where the good (fair) gods lived.
  • Brümsel . In Brümsel there is the defining word brüm for gorse or blackberry (Low German. Still preserved as bobble berries). The basic word is unclear. On the one hand, -sel could mean water, wetness, morass. From sel / sil in transfer to the (fruit) water assigned to the hero principle, cf. urgerm. síh (w) ila, sí (g) wila . Here a place would be named in relation to a correspondingly important body of water where gorse or blackberry bushes stood. On the other hand, "sel" could be an abbreviation of sedil = seat, residence, apartment, shelter. That would result in a dwelling in a blackberry field. Today Brümsel is a district of Messingen and belongs to Messingen both church (since 1919) and school.

Further historical course of the place

In the Middle Ages, Thuine belonged to the county of Tecklenburg . After the defeat of the Tecklenburg Counts in the Schmalkaldic War , Thuine became part of the County of Lingen in 1548 . Under King Friedrich I. Thuine became part of Prussia in 1702 . After the French occupation under Napoleon, Thuine came to the Kingdom of Hanover in 1815 .

Incorporations

On March 1, 1974, parts of the former municipality of Lohe-Venslage, which then had more than 50 inhabitants, were incorporated.
