Bockhorst is a municipality in the northeast of the Emsland district in Lower Saxony . It belongs to the combined municipality of Nordhümmling , which has its administrative seat in the municipality of Esterwegen .

Bockhorst is located on a narrow ridge of midst of huge marshes on Küstenkanal .

Neighboring communities in the north are the communities Rhauderfehn and Ostrhauderfehn in the district of Leer , in the southeast the community Esterwegen and in the southwest the community Surwold and in the east the Saterland in the district Cloppenburg .

history

The community was first mentioned in a document in 1598. The name Bockhorst comes from Middle Low German and means “settlement near the beech trees”. Therefore the coat of arms of the municipality shows three beech leaves. Today's Bockhorst community was formed on October 1, 1931 in what was then the Hümmling district from parts of the Esterwegen community .

The local council in Bockhorst consists of eight councilors. After the local elections in September 2016, it includes three parties.

In 1908/1909 a church in neo-Gothic style was built in Bockhorst for the first time. In 1969 this was torn down and a new church was built in the same place.

Bockhorst can be reached via the federal highway 401 . There is still a motorway connection to the Federal Motorway 31 and Federal Motorway 28 . In addition, the community has an inland port on the coastal channel that crosses the community to the south.
