The federal motorway 28 (abbreviation: BAB 28 ) - short form: Autobahn 28 (abbreviation: A 28 ) - runs in a west-east direction through Lower Saxony , between the A 31 at Leer and the A 1 at the Stuhr triangle . The entire route is routed in the network of European roads as a section of the E 22 . If the A 20 continues to be built to the planned Westerstede triangle , the E 22 will be relocated there.

As a special feature, at the western end of the A 28 at the Leer motorway junction, the A 28 seamlessly merges with the southern branch of the A 31 towards Bottrop / Oberhausen.

At the Oldenburg-West motorway triangle , the eastern branch of the A 28 towards Delmenhorst / Bremen merges seamlessly with the A 293 . To stay on the A 28, the triangle must be crossed in both directions ( TOTSO ).

Oldenburg motorway ring

At Oldenburg, the A 28 is connected to the A 29 ( Wilhelmshaven - Dreieck Ahlhorner Heide ). There are two alternatives. A direct change is possible at the Oldenburg-Ost motorway junction . Preferably the northern branch of the A 29 in the direction of Wilhelmshaven can also be reached from the Oldenburg-West motorway triangle on the A 293 city motorway.

In the Oldenburg area, the A 28 is a city motorway with relatively sharp curves. Here, together with the A 29 and A 293, it forms the Oldenburg motorway ring . The AS 14 Oldenburg-Marschweg only serves the east (Delmenhorst), but not the west (Leer).

The A 28 replaces the former federal highway 75 between Leer and Delmenhorst . The route of the autobahn was mostly rebuilt and runs parallel to the former B 75 on the newly built sections, which, where an independent parallel route has been preserved, has largely been broken down into the state road category , east of Oldenburg also into the district road category . In the areas of the cities of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst, the existing bypass roads along the B 75 were expanded into a motorway.

The eastern end of the A 28 at the level of the Delmenhorst triangle forked into the B 75 and the B 322 until 2006 . The latter closed the three-kilometer gap to the A1 . The fork and junction were expanded to the Delmenhorst triangle by September 2008. Since then, it has been possible to get to the center of Bremen in four lanes from the Stuhr triangle by turning onto the B 75 towards Bremen at the Delmenhorst triangle.

The B 322 was replaced by an extension to the A 28 in the area of the gap closure. Until 2008, the motorway between the Dreieck Delmenhorst and Groß Mackenstedt junctions was still dedicated to 1.5 kilometers because of a petrol station and a Burger King restaurant as the B 322 and named "Weser-Ems-Straße" by the Stuhr municipality, but Signposted as A 28.

For the opening of the Famila XXL shopping center in winter 2007, extensive renovation work was carried out on the Oldenburg-Wechloy exit on the empty lane: In addition to the previous exit onto Ammerländer Heerstraße , an additional junction was created with the notice "Wechloy shopping area", which provides direct access to the premises of the shopping center allow.
