The Osterburg Canal is an approximately 4 km long backwater of the Tide- Hunte . The canal begins at the tipping structure in Tungeln ( Wardenburg municipality ) and ends a little below the bridge of the A 28 motorway in Oldenburg , where it joins the urban stretch of the coastal canal .

The Osterburg Canal was built towards the end of the 19th century when the Hunte was moved westwards between Tungeln and Oldenburg to improve the irrigation and drainage of the meadows on the Hunte and Lethe . The old hunt bed was partially used for the canal.

Course and tributaries

The Osterburger Canal runs in the first section up to the Kreyenbrücke south of the state road L 870. Before the Kreyenbrücke the canal takes the Bümmersteder Fleth on the right side , and then turns to the north. In the further course the Lethe flows into the canal on the left and the Koppelsieltief on the right. Below the Autobahn 28, the Osternburger Canal joins the Hunte and the coastal canal to form the urban stretch of the coastal canal.

The Osterburger Canal lies between the mouth of the Lethe in the canal and the mouth of the canal in the Hunte in the FFH area "Sager Meer, Ahlhorner Fischteiche und Lethe". As of January 1, 2019, the section was designated as the “Easter Burger Canal” nature reserve. The nature reserve with the identification NSG WE 304 is approximately 5.2  hectares and includes the water body of the Osternburg Canal and the adjacent embankment. The canal has an important networking function between the rivers Hunte and Lethe and serves as a habitat and migratory corridor for fish and round- mouthed fish , including perch , gudgeon , hazel , roach , eel , pike , wolffish , river and sea ​​lamprey , as well as other aquatic organisms. The canal and the surrounding him Buschenhagen lowland and Tungelner march are hunting grounds of bats Noctule , lesser noctule , Serotine , Pipistrelle , Common Pipistrelle and Daubenton's bat . On the embankment of the canal settle and. a. Cabbage thistle , common loosestrife , true meadowsweet , swan flower and marsh marigold .

The Osterburger Kanal lies above the crossing through the federal highway 28 in the landscape protection area "Mittlere Hunte". The landscape protection area has become part of the scope of the nature protection ordinance in the “Easter Burger Canal” nature reserve.

The Osterburg Canal is crossed by the L 870, the Niedersachsendamm and the A 28 motorway as well as several utility and footpaths. A fish ladder is built into the Tungeln tee building . Dikes have been created along the canal to protect the hinterland. The top of the dike is used by walkers and cyclists.
