The Lethe at Tungeln

Tungeln is a village of about 1450 inhabitants in the Wardenburg municipality in the Oldenburg district ( Lower Saxony ).

geography

Tungeln is located on the Lethe halfway between Oldenburg and Wardenburg . The place essentially spreads along the three main traffic axes:

  • Oberlether Straße from Tungeln to Oberlethe (approx. 4 km),
  • Oldenburger Straße from Oldenburg- Kreyenbrück to Tungeln (2 km) and from there to Wardenburg (3 km),
  • Hundsmühler Landstrasse to Hundsmühlen (1 km).

history

Today's Tungeln developed from a settlement area that was already used in the Stone Age due to its proximity to the Hunte . It was first mentioned in a document as "Tunglo" in 1160 in connection with a mill. However, there is also the version that Tungeln is derived from the term tongue or snake , which can be traced back to the Lethe flowing through Tungeln, which makes some strong bends in the area of Tungeln.

Over the centuries , forest farmers became heather farmers , and due to the poor quality of the soil and the storage of the groundwater level, grassland farming and rye cultivation have been predominant since the middle of the 19th century. Agricultural development had its heyday around 1860, when 38 farms and 260 residents were to be counted around the old town center. Today there is only one farming family left in the village.

Economy and Infrastructure

The largest commercial enterprise in Tungeln is Schütte Fahrzeugbau GmbH with around 52 employees.

Tungeln is approached almost every half hour from Oldenburg with the regional bus 280 of Deutsche Bahn (Weser-Ems-Bus). In addition, the destination and final stop Am Vogelbusch of bus route 314, which is operated by Oldenburger Verkehr und Wasser GmbH , is located directly in front of the entrance to Tungeln. This stop is served every 30 minutes during the day.

Tourism and culture

In earlier years, the village festival attracted many people - also from the surrounding area - to Tungeln on four days in September. It is not currently taking place. In winter, the cabbage and pee tours known throughout the Oldenburger Land take place. Neighbors, friends or the clubs hike with a colorfully decorated wagon that is stocked with sip and grain (beer, mulled wine and schnapps) on the Huntedeich to the Hundsmühler Krug to celebrate the hearty Oldenburg kale and pee dinner.

In 1904 the sports club Tungeln was founded, which today is active in the fields of soccer and canoeing . In the 2008/08 season, the club's first men's team played in the Oldenburg-Land regional league of the Lower Saxony Football Association .
