Location of Achternmeer in Lower Saxony

Achternmeer is a district of the municipality of Wardenburg in the Oldenburg district in northwestern Lower Saxony .

History and naming

The settlement was founded on August 11, 1817. The first three courtyards with around 7 hectares of land were built "behind the great sea", today's monument path. The name “Achternmeer” comes from the Low German “Achtern Meer”, meaning “Hinterm Meer”. The name arose because a large part of the land behind the village used to consist of moor and was therefore called "sea".

Geographical location

The village is located about ten kilometers southwest of Oldenburg in the municipality of Wardenburg between the places Westerholt , Harbern and Südmoslesfehn .

Korsorsberg

The Korsorsberg, which was 19.5 meters above zero until 1985 and is now 12.5 meters due to sand mining, was part of a Geestrücken, which stretches from here to the southeast. He was the namesake for various streets, clubs and a restaurant. The former survey point on the Korsorberg was restored in 2004.

education

The primary school , which is organized as a full half-day school , is located in the direct town center of Achternmeer , with around 160 students from the villages of Achternmeer, Südmoslesfehn, Westerholt, Benthullen and Harbern. The Achternmeer primary school has been responsible for itself since the 2005/2006 school year. Since 1998 the school has participated in the tenders of the European environmental education foundation " Environmental School in Europe ". The school has already been awarded certificates and the flags “ Environmental School in Europe ” three times for its successfully implemented and documented environmental projects: moor, earthworm, apple project, garbage and outdoor days .

In addition, the kindergarten is right next to the primary school .

The Westerholt bathing lake created in the sand pit has been approved as a bathing lake by the municipality of Wardenburg since the 1980s . There is also a kiosk and a DLRG station in a building with sanitary facilities .
