history

The community of Wardenburg can look back on more than 700 years of existence.

In the past, the old trade route "Die Bronzestraße" ran along the banks of the Hunte, coming up from the south to the North Sea . The village of Wardenberge was built on this road in the "corner" of the Lerigau south of Tunglo (Tungeln). From Charlemagne 782 this was Lerigau been subordinated to the archbishopric of Münster.

In 1270 the Westerholtsche Ritterbund built a castle and the Marienkirche near Wardenberge. Wardenberge, named after the castle was built, became the recognized center of the "angle". The Wardenburg Church, which had become famous as a pilgrimage church far beyond the borders of the country, was burned down in 1538. A new church was only built from the ruins in 1578 by Count Johann VII (1540–1603). The Wardenburg was destroyed in 1342 by the mercenaries of the Bishop of Münster.

War memorial on the Tilly hill in Wardenburg

The following can be read on a notice board at the foot of the Tilly hill : The army of the imperial general Johann t'Serclaes Graf von Tilly (1559 - 1632) camped on the hill from 2 to 23 September 1623 . With 25,000 soldiers, Tilly was in pursuit of the opposing General Ernst von Mansfeld, who had taken a position in East Friesland . Through skilful negotiations and rich gifts, Count Anton Günther von Oldenburg managed to get Tilly's troops to withdraw without a fight. The Wardenburg population suffered from looting and confiscations for three weeks.

In the village of Glum in 1880 a farmer found a wagon wheel that dates back to the older Bronze Age around 1500 BC. BC could be dated. In 1949 the meteorite Benthullen was found in the town of Benthullen . In 2013 a lessor in Charlottendorf-West discovered the remains of a 5118 year old oak at a depth of 4.50 m. The tree trunk can be viewed in the Benthullen Moor and Farmers Museum.
