Name derivation

The following can be read on a notice board at the foot of the Tilly hill:

The army of the imperial general Johann t Serdaes Graf von Tilly (1559 - 1632) camped on the hill from September 2 to 23, 1623 . With 25,000 soldiers, Tilly was in pursuit of the opposing General Ernst von Mansfeld , who had taken a position in East Friesland . Through skilful negotiations and rich gifts, Count Anton Günther von Oldenburg managed to get Tilly's troops to withdraw without a fight. The Wardenburg population suffered from looting and confiscations for three weeks.

In the vernacular, this hill was called "Teepenbarg" until the memorial for the fallen of the First World War was erected in 1925, and only then did the name Tillyhügel prevail in memory of the event of the Thirty Years' War .
