Rachel de Queiroz (born November 17, 1910 in Fortaleza , Brazil , † November 4, 2003 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian writer.

In 1915 she and her family fled the drought areas of northeastern Brazil to Rio de Janeiro, but returned to study in their home state of Ceará . In 1927 she began to work as a journalist and in 1930 published her first novel O Quinze ("The Year 15"), in which she dealt with the experience of the drought. In 1931 she went back to Rio, where she joined the Communist Party. She has also written for numerous newspapers and magazines, including O Cruzeiro .

In addition to her narrative work, Queiroz has published several plays and numerous essay volumes. In 1977 she became the first female writer to become a member of the Academia Brasileira de Letras .
