Westerburg is a small district of the municipality of Wardenburg ( Lower Saxony ) with around 260 inhabitants.
geography
Westerburg is 2 km southeast of the core town of Wardenburg. The Hunte flows 1 km to the east .
The place is about 1 km east of the federal motorway 29 (junction Wardenburg) on the northwest edge of the Wildeshauser Geest nature reserve .
history
As early as 800 a mission church was built by Abbot Gerbert Castus from Visbek in what was then known as Westonstede , which was destroyed by Normans around 890 .
In 1342 the Count of Oldenburg built the Westerburg that gave it its name; however, it was destroyed again in 1474.
