The Marienkirche in Wardenburg is the parish church of the Evangelical Church Community Wardenburg, which belongs to the parish of Delmenhorst / Oldenburg Land of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oldenburg .

history

The first church was built in the course of the Christianization of the Lerigau in the 9th century in the neighboring Westerburg , but was destroyed before 890. In the 13th century there was a newer church with the patronage of Peter , which existed until the 16th century.

From Westerburg, a chapel was founded in Wardenburg in 1268 , which was consecrated to Our Lady ( Maria ) and to which today's church building is essentially based. The chapel is said to have been larger and more splendid than today's church and equipped with five altars . In the late Middle Ages it was the destination of a pilgrimage . There a miraculous portrait of the Virgin Mary with the motif of the Adoration of the Magi was venerated, which was in the high altar and whose whereabouts are unclear after the renovation of the altar in 1793.

After the Reformation , the Marienkirche lost its function as a pilgrimage church , but was elevated to a parish church in the 16th century . In 1538 the church was burned down in a feud between the county of Oldenburg and the bishopric of Münster . Initially, there were no funds available for a new building. Not until 1578 was a new church built under Count Johann VII using the preserved western part. Little changes were made to it until the 19th century. The tower and choir were added in the 20th century .

description

Bell tower

The hall church with tower and polygonal choir was built of brick and plastered . In the older western part, the walls are thicker, which results in a smaller interior width.

The windows in the nave are ogival , the window above the portal on the north side is in the old frame . In the western part of the nave, there are still indications of an earlier vault that was replaced by a flat wooden beam ceiling .

The free-standing bell tower is made of brick in the lower part and wood in the upper part.

Furnishing

organ

The altar dates from 1793. The pulpit , the galleries and the baptismal font made of sandstone in baluster shape were also made around 1800. There are also death shields from 1655, 1663 and 1719 in the church.

The baroque organ with 13 registers was built in 1737 by Johann Dietrich Busch from Itzehoe according to plans by Christian father . The prospectus has also been preserved from this period.
